Tana
Caution
Two products share the Tana name (as of 2026-10-05, per tana.inc and outliner.tana.inc). From 2020 to 2024 “Tana” meant the outliner/PKM tool described below, now called Tana Outliner (https://outliner.tana.inc, still active). The company’s main site https://tana.inc now presents a newer agentic meeting platform: native video calls where AI agents file issues and documents during the call and update a shared “context graph”. Earlier versions of this note described only the outliner.
Tana Outliner (PKM)
Tana Outliner is a cloud-based outliner and knowledge tool made by Tana Inc. Each bullet is a node; supertags turn a node into a typed object with a template of fields, so notes become searchable, filterable collections shown in multiple views. Nodes can be referenced and backlinked.
- Import/export: built-in importers for Notion, Roam, Logseq and Workflowy (OPML); export as Markdown or JSON; a “Tana Intermediate Format” supports community importers.
- API and MCP: local and hosted MCP servers let AI tools such as Claude Code access a workspace; an Input API creates nodes and supertags over HTTP (no read access yet, per the docs page fetched 2026-10-05). See Model Context Protocol.
- AI: meeting transcription without bots, chat with note context, image generation, voice memos, live dictation; AI credits are included with paid plans.
- Trade-offs (opinion): Tana is cloud-based rather than local-first plain files like Obsidian; modelling with supertags has a learning curve; export exists (Markdown or JSON) but the result is not an Obsidian-style vault.
Tana meeting platform (current tana.inc)
Per the product page (fetched 2026-10-05): real-time transcription in 33 languages, agents with live tool access, integrations with GitHub, Linear, Slack, Google Calendar, Outlook, Jira, HubSpot, Lovable, Cursor and Claude; guests join by link. Web app and desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux; native mobile apps listed as coming. Security claims: SOC 2 Type 2 certified, GDPR-compliant, no LLM training on user data (vendor statements). Plans: free, Pro, Team and Business, with a free tier limited by meetings per month and AI queries; see https://tana.inc/pricing (no amounts recorded here). Pricing page copy refers to early-bird pricing for early users.
Modelling pattern (outliner)
An example setup (the author’s suggestion, not a vendor recommendation) uses supertags such as Source, Permanent Note, Project, Task, Person, each with typed fields (status, dates, references), plus saved search nodes (for example “open tasks assigned to me” or “notes without sources”) and an Inbox tag for capture-then-process. This can be mapped onto Zettelkasten and PARA workflows (opinion); the longer worked templates live in Tana-tool-note.
Migration tips
General advice (not from a source): export originals first; map YAML frontmatter keys to supertag fields and headings to nodes; test with a 20-50 note subset before bulk import.
