AutoGen is in maintenance mode (no new features; community managed, per its README). Microsoft Agent Framework (announced Oct 2025, GA 1.0 on 2026-04-03) is its successor; this is a convergence of AutoGen and Semantic Kernel, not a literal merge.

AutoGen

Microsoft Research’s open-source framework for multi-agent applications, with three layers: Core API (message passing, event-driven agents, Python and .NET runtime), AgentChat API (opinionated high-level patterns) and Extensions API (LLM clients, code execution). AutoGen Studio is a no-code GUI. The README points to a migration guide for users coming from v0.2.
