Cline

by Cline (open source)

Open-source AI coding agent that works in your editor, terminal, desktop and your own products. Actively maintained: the repository was last pushed on 2026-10-10.

Status (checked 2026-10-10)

Still in active use and development, per the GitHub repository (cline/cline) and the vendor site:

  • Latest releases: extension v4.1.23 (2026-10-07); CLI v3.0.70 (2026-10-08); desktop v0.0.45 (2026-10-08); SDK v0.0.92 (2026-10-08). Releases are frequent: several per week across the four products.
  • Repository: Apache-2.0; about 70.1k stars, 7.6k forks and 1,648 open issues on the day checked.
  • Adoption (vendor-stated, undated): “11M+ installs across all platforms” and “Trusted by 11M+ developers”. Third-party directories give smaller marketplace-only figures; the vendor number includes all platforms.

Features

  • Surfaces (cline.bot): IDE extension (VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code Insiders; JetBrains in early access), CLI for terminal, scripts, cron jobs and CI, desktop app (“Cline for Desktop”, no editor required), and an SDK for embedding the agent and registering custom tools and lifecycle hooks.
  • Plan-and-Act workflow, multi-file edits with linter-aware fixes, bash execution, MCP, Slack/Linear/CI integrations (from the earlier vendor-page read; not re-checked today).
  • Model-agnostic: Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Bedrock and local models (Ollama).
  • Rules: .clinerules; also supports AGENTS.md per agents.md. See cline-rules-explained.

Context

Roo Code forked from Cline and Kilo Code combined both. Roo Code is archived on GitHub (last push 2026-05-15, the date of its shutdown notice), and Cline is the upstream alternative named in that notice. kilo-code is the other.

Plans

Free and BYOK by default: users pay their model providers. The vendor page names “Plan”, “Enterprise” and “ClinePass” in its navigation but does not describe their contents. Secondary sources say ClinePass is a subscription for open models and that a per-user Teams plan exists; neither is confirmed on a vendor page, so treat both as open items. Secondary sources also report a Cline 4.0 release on 2026-06-26; the v4 line is confirmed on GitHub, but that start date is not, because it falls outside the release list checked.

Open items

  • ClinePass and Teams plan details, and whether Teams pricing still applies, are not confirmed on a vendor page.
  • The Plan-and-Act and integration feature list has not been re-verified against current docs.
  • The v4.0 start date (2026-06-26) is unconfirmed.
