Durable, scalable object storage with buckets, storage classes and lifecycle rules.
Storage classes (as of 2026-10-05, per Google docs)
- Rapid (
RAPID): zonal, low latency for AI/ML and I/O-heavy work; zonal buckets need hierarchical namespace and uniform bucket-level access and support appendable objects; docs list it as generally available. - Standard, Nearline (30-day minimum), Coldline (90-day), Archive (365-day; still millisecond access).
- All classes: “11 nines” annual durability, no object-size minimum. Locations: region, dual-region, multi-region, or a zone (Rapid).
- Rapid Cache (renamed from Anywhere Cache): SSD-backed zonal read cache, strongly consistent, for read-heavy analytics/training.
Features
- Lifecycle rules, versioning, soft delete, managed folders, signed URLs, IAM and uniform bucket-level access.
- Encryption at rest by default; customer-managed (Cloud KMS) or customer-supplied keys; VPC Service Controls.
- JSON and XML (S3-interoperable) APIs, client libraries, Console.
- Feeds BigQuery, Dataproc (Managed Service for Apache Spark), Vertex AI, and hosts static assets (often behind Cloud CDN).
CLI: gsutil vs gcloud storage
gsutil is a legacy, minimally maintained CLI; Google recommends gcloud storage, which supports newer features (soft delete, managed folders). Docs say that after March 2027 gsutil will no longer ship in the gcloud CLI package and will be a standalone PyPI install. Examples:

Depends on storage class, location type, operations (class A/B), retrieval, and egress; free usage tier exists. Pricing: https://cloud.google.com/storage/pricing. (Opinion: egress and small-operation volume can dominate cost; co-locating compute with data helps. Not sourced.)
