Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)

by Google Cloud

Managed Kubernetes on Google Cloud: Google runs the control plane; Autopilot also manages nodes.

Modes

  • Autopilot is Google’s recommended default: GKE provisions and manages infrastructure; best-practice constraints apply (for example no privileged Pods).
  • Standard: you manage node pools; needed for special privileges or low-level node configuration.
  • Hybrid: Autopilot-style workloads can run inside Standard clusters through compute classes.
  • The mode affects billing (see the GKE pricing page).

Features

  • Managed, upgradable control plane; node pools with GPUs and Spot VMs; HPA/VPA/cluster autoscaling.
  • VPC-native and private clusters, network policy, Workload Identity, Binary Authorization, Shielded and Confidential GKE Nodes.
  • Gateway/Ingress with Cloud Load Balancing; Persistent Disk, Filestore, CSI storage.
  • Release channels (Rapid etc.). Per the GKE release notes (fetched 2026-10-05): Kubernetes 1.37 reached the Rapid channel on 2026-09-04; Confidential GKE Nodes with Intel TDX went GA on c3-standard on 2026-09-03; Standard clusters raised the pod-per-node maximum to 512 on 2026-09-25; GKE ambient (sidecarless) networking entered allowlisted Preview on 2026-09-24.
  • Agents: “Agent Substrate” (suspends idle agents and restores state) launched 2026-09-11 for evaluation and non-production, with limited GA for production, per release notes.

Anthos and GKE Enterprise

Secondary sources (nicheelab.com, cloudfleet.ai; not Google) report that Anthos was rebranded GKE Enterprise and that the Enterprise tier was later folded into standard GKE; neither date is verified here. See Anthos.

GKE vs Cloud Run (author’s view, opinion)

GKE for complex, stateful or Kubernetes-native systems and custom networking; Cloud Run for stateless request-driven services with minimal ops. VMs underneath come from Compute Engine.

Example

gcloud container clusters create-auto my-autopilot-cluster --region=us-central1

For Standard: gcloud container clusters create my-cluster --zone=us-central1-a --num-nodes=3 --workload-pool=PROJECT.svc.id.goog.

Billing model

Cluster management fee plus node (Standard) or Pod resource (Autopilot) billing; free tier credit exists. See https://cloud.google.com/kubernetes-engine/pricing.
