Trino and Starburst
What it is
Trino is an open-source distributed MPP SQL query engine (Java, Apache 2.0) for federated analytics: it queries object storage and many databases without moving data. Starburst sells commercial Trino-based products.
Maker, ownership and history
Trino is a fork of Presto created in January 2019 by Presto’s original creators (Martin Traverso, Dain Sundstrom, David Phillips); first branded PrestoSQL, renamed Trino in December 2020 (Wikipedia, secondary). Starburst: company note Starburst. Used inside Amazon Athena, Starburst Galaxy and Dune (Wikipedia).
Editions/deployment
- Trino open source, self-managed.
- Starburst Galaxy: managed cloud service (data products, cluster admin, “Starburst AI” section in docs).
- Starburst Enterprise: self-managed/on-prem.
Pricing: see starburst.io pricing page.
Core architecture
Coordinator plus workers, in-memory pipelined execution, fault-tolerant execution option, connectors for Iceberg, Delta, Hudi, Hive, relational and NoSQL sources. Compute only: data stays where it lives. Hudi’s Trino connector now lives in the Hudi repo (Trino 483, Hudi 1.2.1).
Role in an enterprise AI rollout
Federated access layer so RAG/agent pipelines and analysts query lake and operational sources through one SQL endpoint; Gravitino also integrates with Trino.
AI features (as of 2026-10-07)
Starburst docs list a “Starburst AI” section for Galaxy; contents could not be fetched (404), so named features, MCP support and tier limits are unverified.
Integrations
Iceberg (and REST catalogs: catalogs), Delta Lake, Hudi.
Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)
Strong federation and open formats; needs cluster tuning; no storage layer of its own.
