Dremio

What it is

An “open lakehouse platform, based on community-driven standards like Apache Iceberg and Apache Arrow” (Dremio docs): self-service SQL analytics on lake data with sub-second query response goals, DML on lake tables, and federation with external databases without migration.

Maker, ownership and history

Dremio was founded in 2015 by Tomer Shiran (co-founder, CEO at the time) and Jacques Nadeau (co-founder, CTO); its 2017-07-19 launch release describes an open-source (Apache licence) self-service data platform and over USD 15M raised since founding, from Lightspeed and Redpoint (Dremio press release). Later rounds: USD 135M led by Sapphire Ventures (2021-01) and a USD 160M Series E on 2022-01-25 at a USD 2B valuation led by Adams Street Partners (Dremio press release). Sendur Sellakumar (ex-Splunk) was named CEO on 2023-07-05, after Billy Bosworth held the role in 2022.

Ownership change

2026-05-04: SAP SE announced it would acquire Dremio (terms not disclosed; expected close Q3 2026). 2026-07-06: SAP announced it had completed the acquisition (SAP News Center). SAP stated it would keep investing in and prioritising contributions to Apache Iceberg, Polaris and Arrow, and would combine Dremio with SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP HANA Cloud. The completion release does not say what happens to the Dremio brand or product line. See SAP.

Editions/deployment

Docs (current 26.x; Autonomous Reflections are documented for query acceleration) name Dremio Cloud (fully managed) and Dremio Enterprise (self-managed); the llms.txt index also lists a Community Edition on Docker (limited features, for local testing and evaluation) and the docs footer links a “Dremio Cloud Classic” page. Cloud billing is described as DCUs (compute), LLM tokens (AI features) and storage. See dremio.com for pricing. (An earlier version of this note said “Dremio Software”; the current docs use “Dremio Enterprise”.)

Core architecture

Iceberg tables as the primary format, Arrow-based engine, catalog based on Apache Polaris (“Open Catalog”; see catalogs). (Dremio Cloud docs describe a built-in Apache Polaris-powered Open Catalog; the earlier claim that Dremio OSS is a listed Polaris-compatible engine was not re-verified.)

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

Semantic layer and governed access for BI and agents. SAP positions the Dremio deal as unifying SAP and non-SAP data for agentic AI without data movement or format conversion (SAP News Center, 2026-05-04).

AI features (as of 2026-10-07)

Dremio Cloud docs have pages for an MCP Server (connect AI agents; llms.txt says it supports Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code, with OAuth and PAT authentication, enforcing existing access controls), a Developer CLI, and an in-console AI Agent (discover datasets, analyse data in natural language, generate visualisations; supports local CSV/JSON/Parquet files and reusable skills). AI-enabled semantic search and AI-assisted wiki/label generation are also documented. The pages opened carry no preview/GA label; tier limits are not stated. An “AI Semantic Layer” named in the earlier version was not found as a docs page.

Integrations

Iceberg; compares with Trino and Starburst. SAP Business Data Cloud and HANA Cloud are the announced integration targets after the SAP acquisition. Monte Carlo lists Dremio as a public-preview integration (Monte Carlo docs llms.txt, 2026-10-08).

Strengths and weaknesses

  • Resolved 2026-10-08: founding (2015), founders, funding rounds, CEO changes and the SAP acquisition (announced 2026-05-04, completed 2026-07-06) are now sourced to Dremio and SAP press releases.
  • Still unverified: preview/GA status of the AI Agent and MCP server (docs carry no label); SAP’s plan for the Dremio brand and product line; any claim that Dremio OSS is a listed Polaris-compatible engine (removed). No separate company note exists (would share a basename with this note).
