Activepieces

Open-source, no-code workflow automation platform in the Zapier / n8n / Make space. Automations (“flows”) are built in a web drag-and-drop builder with branches and loops, and can run on Activepieces Cloud or self-hosted with Docker (GitHub README, 2026-10-14).

Licence and status

  • Community Edition is MIT-licensed; enterprise features sit under a separate commercial licence. This differs from n8n’s source-available “fair-code” licence.
  • GitHub: activepieces/activepieces.
  • Founded in 2022 by Mohammad AbuAboud and Ashraf Samhouri; Y Combinator S22 batch.

Pieces and MCP

  • Integrations are called pieces: TypeScript packages, versioned and published to npm when contributed. The README says about 60% are community-contributed.
  • Every piece is also exposed automatically as an MCP server, so the same integrations can be used from LLM clients such as Claude Desktop, Cursor or Windsurf. The README cites 280+ pieces available over MCP.

Self-hosting

The 2GuysTek walkthrough installs it on a Linux VM with Docker, either as a single docker run or Docker Compose (clone the repo, generate the env file, start the containers). Demo flow: new YouTube video trigger, then a Discord webhook message, with a default 5-minute polling interval. The video mentions 157 ready-made templates (figure from the video, may be dated).

Billing

Cloud tiers plus a free self-hosted Community Edition. Cloud billing is credit/usage based and published figures conflict between the vendor and third-party trackers, so see the vendor pricing page for current tiers.

Open items

  • Funding: only aggregator sites report a small YC-era raise (reportedly $125K, Accel among investors); no company source found. Not asserted here.
  • Current Cloud tier names and what each unlocks were not confirmed from the live pricing page.
