Codeium VS Code extension (now Windsurf Plugin)

The free VS Code extension from Codeium (company note: codeium) offering AI autocomplete and chat for Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Go and more. Codeium also made the editor windsurf; the same company is now part of cognition.

Superseded: legacy plugin in maintenance mode

Codeium renamed itself Windsurf on 2025-04-04 (the extension became the “Windsurf Plugin”), and the Windsurf editor became Devin Desktop on 2026-06-02 under Cognition (see windsurf). Cognition’s plugin docs (docs.devin.ai/windsurf/plugins/getting-started, fetched 2026-10-02) state that the JetBrains plugin is in maintenance mode and recommend the native editor or the JetBrains local plugin for advanced agentic features; per continuumcode.ai (secondary) the same applies to the other plugins. For a current coding assistant use windsurf (Devin Desktop) or alternatives such as github-copilot, cursor and cline.

Known problems

  • GitHub issue Exafunction/codeium #336 (2026-06-07) reports that after the rebrand the extension (v1.48.2) login redirects to devin://acp?connectorId=devin-cloud and never completes; no maintainer reply was visible when checked.
  • The Visual Studio Marketplace page for Codeium.codeium returned HTTP 404 to the fetcher on 2026-10-02, so listing state could not be confirmed from the Marketplace itself.
