Renamed Devin Desktop on 2026-06-02 (verified 2026-09-30)

Cognition (owner since its 2025-07-14 acquisition) shipped the rename as an over-the-air update. Windsurf is now Devin Desktop, described by Cognition as “the next generation of Windsurf”; existing projects, plans and settings carried over. Cognition’s announcement is primary (cognition.com/blog/introducing-devin-desktop); details beyond it come from secondary write-ups. This was “unverified” in the audit’s Appendix A; it is confirmed.

History

  • 2024-11/12: Codeium launches Windsurf (Wave 1); 2025-04-04 Codeium company renamed Windsurf (secondary source).

  • 2025-07: after a reported OpenAI buyout fell through, Google struck a separate licensing/hiring deal (reported $2.4B) taking the CEO and part of the team into DeepMind; Cognition acquired Windsurf (product, IP, brand, remaining team) on 2025-07-14.

  • 2026-06-02: rebranded Devin Desktop: Agent Command Center as the default surface for local and cloud agents, Cascade replaced by “Devin Local” (secondary sources; rewritten in Rust per Cognition’s announcement as reported), Spaces for shared context, and Agent Client Protocol (ACP) support so third-party agents (reportedly Claude, Codex, OpenCode) run alongside Devin.

  • Plans now follow devin: Free (desktop download with Tab and inline edits), Pro, Max, Teams, Enterprise custom. Current prices: see https://devin.ai/pricing.

  • Rules: Devin Desktop reads .windsurf/rules/, .windsurfrules and .devin/rules/ per Claude Code’s /init migration list; see also agents-md.
