gemini-3-pro-image): Google’s premium image model for complex, high-fidelity generation and editing. Closed, API-only.
Status (2026-10-02)
Stable on the Gemini API: gemini-3-pro-image was released 2026-05-28 and Google’s deprecations page announces no shutdown date. The preview ID gemini-3-pro-image-preview (released 2025-11-20) was shut down on 2026-06-25, replacement gemini-3-pro-image. Not to be confused with the retirements Google did announce around it: Imagen 4 (all variants) shuts down 2026-08-17 and gemini-2.5-flash-image on 2026-10-02 (replacement gemini-3.1-flash-image-preview). Since February 2026 nano-banana-2 (gemini-3.1-flash-image, stable since 2026-05-28) is the default in the Gemini app, and Pro remains available to Google’s paid plans (per the earlier note).

- Google Search grounding; SynthID watermark on all outputs.
- Thinking: the docs list controllable thinking for NB2 and Lite, not Pro; Pro’s reasoning behaviour is unverified here.
When to choose Pro
Complex multi-image composition, studio-grade detail and maximum fidelity; NB2 is faster and cheaper for everyday work. Earlier claims of “95-99% likeness retention”, “300 DPI” and specific per-call prices were vendor/press figures and are unverified.
