Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is an Alphabet AI research and model-building lab. Per Wikipedia, it created AlphaGo and AlphaFold and, since the 2023 merger with Google Brain, builds the Gemini models, Veo, Gemma and the Gemini Robotics models.

Overview

  • Founded: 2010 in London by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman (Wikipedia gives 2010-11-15)
  • Acquired: by Google on 2014-01-26; Wikipedia gives the price as 500 million” was a midpoint estimate)
  • Merger: combined with Google Brain in 2023-04 as Google DeepMind
  • Leadership: Demis Hassabis (CEO), Koray Kavukcuoglu (senior VP; reportedly announced in 2026-09 that Gemini 4 was entering post-training, per Dataconomy search summary), Lila Ibrahim (COO). About 6,000 staff (2025, Wikipedia).
  • Parent: Sundar Pichai’s Alphabet; see Alphabet for financials.
  • Office: moved to Platform 37, King’s Cross, London in summer 2026 (Wikipedia).

Models and products

Details in gemini-3-x-family and gemini-3-series.

  • Gemini: Gemini 3 (2025-11), 3.1 Pro (preview as of the vault note), 3.5 (announced at I/O 2026-05), 3.6 to 3.8 Flash, and Gemini 4 Argon (reportedly announced 2026-09-30, restricted to cyber defenders first; not verified against a primary source).
  • Open weights: gemma-4 (Apache-licensed per press), plus Gemini Nano for devices.
  • Video and worlds: Veo (Veo 3 with synchronised audio, 2025-05); Genie 3 (2025-08) and Project Genie, reportedly released to AI Ultra subscribers on 2026-01-29; Gemini Omni (I/O 2026). Dates in this section are from Wikipedia and the I/O summary and are not individually verified.
  • Images: Nano Banana models.
  • Robotics: Gemini Robotics 1.5 (2025-09), ER 1.6 (2026-04), and ER 2 (reportedly announced 2026-07-30; search snippet only).
  • Coding agents: Google Antigravity and Jules, plus tips in google-deepmind-agentic-coding-tips.
  • Research tools: AlphaEvolve (2025-05, an evolutionary coding agent that designs algorithms), AlphaGenome Atlas and WeatherNext 3 (both 2026-09, per Wikipedia), NotebookLM (Google Labs).

Science

  • AlphaGo: beat Lee Sedol in 2016.
  • AlphaFold: AlphaFold 2 predicts protein structures; Hassabis and John Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. AlphaFold 3 followed in 2024. (Science facts in this section are general knowledge or Wikipedia, secondary, not individually sourced.)
  • AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry: silver-medal level at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad.
  • Isomorphic Labs: the Alphabet drug-discovery company spun out of this work (no 2026 facts were verified for this note).

Earlier work (kept for context)

Carried over from the earlier version and not re-verified: DeepMind Health work with clinicians, machine learning to cut data-centre cooling energy, and an ethics and safety function. (The older note’s “ethics board” claim was not verified and was dropped.)

Corrections to the earlier version

type was misspelled comoany. The link [[KB-TECH/COMPANIES/Google]] pointed to a note that does not exist and was replaced by Alphabet. The note called AlphaFold2 “more recent” and omitted everything after 2024.
