What it gives you

  • Input: screen, window, camera and audio sources composed into scenes. Output: recordings and live streams.
  • Documented developer and plugin APIs at obsproject.com/docs.

Key differentiator

The standard free tool for live capture and streaming with scene composition, with a plugin ecosystem. Source: README.

Pick something else when

Playwright or Puppeteer video capture (both Apache-2.0, actively maintained) when the thing to record is a web page and an agent scripts it. An ffmpeg screen grab for a simple scripted capture. Use HyperFrames or Remotion when you generate frames rather than record them.

Agent fit

Poor. Capture is a human-operated desktop task; a generated-video pipeline renders frames instead of recording screens.

Overlap within the 20

Overlaps FFmpeg only for recording and encoding.
