ClickHouse

What it is

Open-source (Apache 2.0) column-oriented database for real-time analytical SQL, available self-hosted or as managed ClickHouse Cloud. Written in C++.

Maker, ownership and history

Work began in 2009 under Alexey Milovidov and a small team; ClickHouse launched in 2012 to power what the company calls the second-largest web analytics platform in the world, and was released as open source under the Apache 2 licence in 2016 (“Our Story” page, primary). The Yandex origin (Yandex.Metrica) is from Wikipedia only. ClickHouse, Inc. incorporated in Delaware in 2021 (HQ San Francisco Bay Area) with a USD 50M investment in September 2021, raised a USD 250M Series B at USD 2B valuation in October 2021 and a USD 350M Series C led by Khosla Ventures on 2025-05-29. A USD 400M Series D led by Dragoneer was announced 2026-01-16 (valuation not disclosed), alongside the Langfuse acquisition (see Langfuse) and a managed Postgres launch. Company: ClickHouse, Inc..

Editions and deployment

Open-source server; ClickHouse Cloud (fully managed, compute-storage separation via SharedMergeTree, ClickPipes ingestion, SQL console and SSO/RBAC as described in docs; compliance claims such as HIPAA/SOC2/GDPR not verified); chDB embedded engine. Pricing: see clickhouse.com/pricing.

Core architecture

Columnar storage, vectorised execution, MergeTree engine family, SQL; data lake compatibility and full-text search for observability are mentioned on the ClickHouse blog (dates not verified).

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

Possible uses (author’s view, opinion): backing store for high-throughput analytics, LLM observability and agent telemetry. That Langfuse runs on ClickHouse was not verified in this pass.

AI features as of 2026-10-08

  • MCP: open-source mcp-clickhouse (Apache-2.0; tools run_query, list_databases, list_tables, chDB query; ~880 stars); documented integrations with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, LangChain and others.
  • Langfuse acquisition: the repository LICENSE (copyright ClickHouse, Inc., 2023-2026) applies the MIT Expat licence outside its ee/ directories, which carry a separate enterprise licence (GitHub, 2026-10-08); the Series D post reports 20K+ stars and 26M+ monthly SDK installs at the end of 2025.
  • Postgres managed by ClickHouse (built in partnership with Ubicloud), announced 2026-01-16; declared “now in beta” on 2026-05-27 with free usage until metering began on 2026-06-15 and a 50 percent beta discount (company blog); no GA announcement found as of 2026-10-08. Native CDC via ClickPipes and the pg_clickhouse extension are included.
  • SQL console AI assistance (docs).

Integrations

Kafka and ClickPipes ingestion, lake formats, BI via Grafana (Grafana), LLM tooling (agent-evals-and-observability).

Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

Strengths: fast aggregations (opinion), open source, growth (ARR growth over 250 percent year on year and 3,000+ Cloud customers, vendor claims in the 2026-01-16 announcement). Weaknesses: not a transactional store (the company now sells a separate managed Postgres for that), joins and updates may be less natural (opinion), governance/catalog layer relative to lakehouse platforms not compared with sources.
