Oracle AI Data Platform and Autonomous AI Database

What it is

Two linked Oracle offerings: Oracle AI Database 26ai (and its managed form, Autonomous AI Database) with built-in AI Vector Search and Select AI, and Oracle AI Data Platform, an OCI service for cataloguing, ingesting and analysing data and building agents.

Maker, ownership and history

Oracle. Oracle announced Oracle AI Database 26ai on 2025-10-14 at Oracle AI World as a long-term-support release that replaces Oracle Database 23ai; customers move by applying the October 2025 release update, with no upgrade or application re-certification (Oracle press release, primary). The same day Oracle announced the general availability of Oracle AI Data Platform (press release, primary). Runs on OCI. Earlier names (23c, 23ai) and their dates are not sourced here.

Editions and deployment

Autonomous AI Database and Oracle AI Database (cloud and, for the database, on-premises); AI Data Platform instances on OCI with IAM policies. Commercial, closed source. Pricing: see Oracle’s pages; none recorded. Exact SKU/edition names not verified.

Core architecture

• Converged database: the same data can be accessed relationally via SQL, as JSON documents or as a graph, plus vectors (26ai press release 2025-10-14). Unified Hybrid Vector Search combines AI Vector Search with relational, text, JSON, knowledge-graph and spatial search.
• VECTOR data type introduced with 26ai/23ai generation (needs COMPATIBLE 23.4.0+), exact and approximate (vector-index) similarity search, support for ONNX embedding models (press release and docs).
• AI Data Platform: lakehouse in open formats (Delta Lake and Iceberg), a catalog giving unified governance over data and AI assets, plus notebooks, workflows, SDK and CLI (docs); Agent Hub for business users (press release). Autonomous AI Lakehouse (26ai) supports Apache Iceberg.

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

Keeps embeddings next to business data so RAG needs no separate vector store (Vector embeddings); Select AI gives natural-language access; AI Data Platform provides catalog, pipelines and agent building for Oracle-centric estates, feeding Oracle Analytics.

AI features as of 2026-10-08

• AI Vector Search: vector type, indexes, similarity SQL, ONNX models (Oracle 26ai docs). The 2025-10-14 release says AI Vector Search and other advanced AI features are included at no additional charge.
• 26ai MCP server support for AI agents, and Select AI Agent in Autonomous AI Database: in-database agent framework with custom and pre-built tools, external tools via REST and MCP servers (press release 2025-10-14; some 26ai features were listed as “planned” at that date).
• Select AI: SQL/PL/SQL, Python and Java interface (DBMS_CLOUD_AI) for natural language to SQL, RAG over vector stores, synthetic data, chat and SQL explanation; Select AI Agent for building agents (Oracle docs, re-read 2026-10-07: interfaces in SQL/PL-SQL, Python and Java; DBMS_CLOUD_AI; “Select AI Agent Capability Matrix”). Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

Strengths: one engine for transactional, vector and relational data; strong for existing Oracle shops. Weaknesses: Oracle lock-in; fast renaming (23c/23ai/26ai, Autonomous AI Database) confuses; open-format support (Iceberg, Delta) is announced by Oracle but depth is not independently tested here.
