Programmatic video rendering engines compared
Layer: Rendering. The two in the motion-studio list are HyperFrames and Remotion; the table adds Motion Canvas, Revideo, editly and OpenMontage. Part of Open-source motion studio: 20 repos. License, release and push dates checked 2026-10-27 through GitHub and npm; capabilities are from each project’s README or docs and were not run here.
A dash (—) in a table means no information was recorded for that cell.

Remotion’s license, in plain terms
The LICENSE.md says individuals, for-profit organisations with up to 3 employees, non-profits, and evaluators are eligible for the free license; other organisations need a company license (see remotion.pro). It forbids copying or modifying Remotion to sell or relicense a derivative. It is source-available, not open source. The file also notes that the license will change slightly in Remotion 5.0.
Which one when
- Agent writes the video as text, you want no build step or license threshold: HyperFrames.
- You already have React skills or want an embeddable Player, a mature cloud renderer or a ready ecosystem of templates and docs: Remotion, after checking you fit the free tier. Remotion’s docs list over 1,000 pages and rendering paths for Node, Lambda, Vercel and client-side.
- You like generator-style animation in TypeScript with a visual editor: Motion Canvas; Revideo if you need headless rendering from code.
- You only edit and concatenate clips from a declarative spec: editly, noting its last commit is 2025-05.
- You want a ready-made orchestrated pipeline rather than an engine: OpenMontage.
- You only cut and join existing footage: FFmpeg.
HyperFrames’ own README compares itself with Remotion (authoring, build step, agent handoff, license) and calls Remotion’s cloud renderer more mature; treat that comparison as the vendor’s.
