Overview
Atlan was founded in 2019 by Prukalpa Sankar and Varun Banka (co-CEOs), who came from data-project work for organisations such as the UN, the Gates Foundation and the Government of India (company about page). Sources disagree on location: the about page says it was founded in Singapore, the 2024 Series C release lists San Francisco as HQ; the earlier note said New York (open item). Atlan positions itself as a “context layer for AI”: metadata, lineage, business definitions and policies from many systems in one store that people and AI agents consume.
