Claude Fable 5.1

by Anthropic

Anthropic’s updated flagship, announced alongside Claude Mythos 5.1 on
September 1, 2026. Pitched as the world’s most advanced model for coding and knowledge work, with
stronger long-running task and research capability, materially lower effective cost, and safety-tuning
aimed at reducing over-triggered refusals. Available everywhere today.

Overview

Fable 5.1 succeeds Claude Fable 5 (released June 9, 2026), confirming months of leak
coverage that a “5.1” build existed complete but withheld — see the 2026 update log on the Fable 5 note.
Anthropic frames it around two axes: capability at the high end (complex, long-running tasks; research
work described as an early look at AI contributing to scientific progress) and cost efficiency at lower
effort settings, where it can match or beat Fable 5’s results at much lower cost.

What’s new vs. Fable 5

  • New standard on Anthropic’s benchmarks — described as the model’s headline result
  • Lower-effort mode parity — at reduced reasoning effort, matches or exceeds Fable 5 output quality
    at substantially lower cost
  • Cache reads 75% cheaper than Fable 5 — reduces real-world cost by ~25% for typical workloads and
up to ~45% for highly agentic workloads
  • Cybersecurity safeguards flag benign requests ~60% less often (fewer false-positive refusals)
  • Biology/medical question fallback rate cut by ~85% on basic questions
  • Positioned as a direct response to prior user feedback on price, data retention, and safeguards

Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS)

Announced alongside the model release, not exclusive to Fable 5.1 but launching with it:

  • Gives enterprise customers complete privacy — equivalent to zero data retention — while remaining
    state-of-the-art at blocking adversarial use
  • Data stays on the customer’s own cloud, not Anthropic’s infrastructure
  • Developed with 100+ customers
  • Rolling out in phases starting fall 2026

Availability

  • Fable 5.1: available everywhere, effective September 1, 2026
  • Compare: Claude Mythos 5.1 — same announcement, restricted to trusted access
programs (cyberdefenders, life scientists) rather than general release
