Claude Mythos 5.1
by Anthropic
Anthropic’s updated model “for cyberdefenders and life scientists,” announced alongside
Claude Fable 5.1 on September 1, 2026. Available only through trusted access
programs, continuing Claude Mythos 5’s restricted-release pattern under Project
Glasswing rather than general availability.
Overview
Mythos 5.1 succeeds Claude Mythos 5 (released June 9, 2026) as the specialized
counterpart to Fable 5.1, announced in the same release. Anthropic’s framing
narrowed the target audience explicitly to cyberdefenders and life scientists, versus Mythos 5’s
broader “government contracts, security research” framing — consistent with the model’s role serving
use cases (offensive/defensive security research, biology) where Fable’s standard safeguards would
block legitimate work.
Relationship to the Fable 5.1 release
The two models share a single announcement and, per the established Fable/Mythos pattern, are expected
to share underlying capability improvements — see Claude Fable 5.1 for the
detailed changes (cost reduction, safeguard tuning, benchmark gains). Distinguishing factors called out
in the announcement:
- Access: Fable 5.1 is available everywhere today; Mythos 5.1 is available only through trusted
access programs - Audience: explicitly scoped to cyberdefenders and life scientists, narrower than Mythos 5’s
broader authorized-user base
Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS)
Same EFS program announced alongside Fable 5.1 applies at the platform level — zero-data-retention-
equivalent privacy for enterprise customers, data kept on the customer’s own cloud, phased rollout from
fall 2026. See Claude Fable 5.1 for details.
