Databricks AI/BI (Dashboards and Genie)

What it is

Warehouse-native BI built into the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform: AI/BI Dashboards (SQL-defined datasets, visuals, filters, scheduling, embedding) plus Genie, the conversational layer. Since June 2026 the Genie family is branded Genie One (business-user interface), Genie Agents (curated spaces with trusted data and rules; earlier called Genie spaces) and Genie Code (AI assistant for authoring, including dashboards). The Genie details are in the existing note BI Genie; this note covers dashboards and the BI view.

Maker and history

  • Maker: Databricks. AI/BI Genie became GA on 2025-06-12 (Databricks blog, seen in search results only; not opened). On 2026-06-09 Genie was renamed Genie One; Genie One reached GA at Data + AI Summit (2026-06-15), per the Databricks AI/BI release notes (web app GA 2026-06-15; Microsoft Teams and Slack apps GA 2026-06-11).

Products and editions

Included in the Databricks workspace (AWS, Azure, GCP); dashboards run on SQL warehouses (compute billed as normal), Genie products have separate usage-based billing details (see the Genie note and docs). Databricks states on its training page that a free edition exists for learners. No separate BI licence per viewer is stated in the docs read; check pricing: https://www.databricks.com/product/pricing

Data connectivity and modelling

Data lives in the lakehouse under Unity Catalog (governance, row filters, masking). Semantic layer: Unity Catalog metric views (local metric views GA June-Aug 2026; low-code UI for metric views Aug 2026) and Unity Catalog Metrics (core features in Public Preview, announced 2026-06-15) reusable across dashboards, agents and apps. Query language: Databricks SQL. Dashboard relationships (Public Preview, July 2026).

Deployment

Cloud only (managed Databricks on AWS/Azure/GCP). Dashboards share at workspace/account level, subscribe by email/Slack, embed via iframe; embedding for external users reported GA (summit coverage, secondary); Git folders for dashboards GA (July 2026).

AI features as of summer 2026 (Databricks AI/BI and Genie One release notes)

  • Genie Code for dashboard authoring: GA May 2026 per release notes; “dashboard materialization” Beta Sept 2026.
  • Genie One: GA June 2026; Memory GA Sept 2026; Documents, search past conversations; desktop app (macOS) Beta and mobile app Public Preview Aug 2026.
  • Agent mode (multi-step research): GA July 2026 per release notes (the older note BI Genie still says Public Preview as of 2026-10-02: conflict, prefer the release notes).
  • Genie Ontology (“a unified context layer that gives Genie a business-aware map of your organization”): Public Preview, enabled by default since 2026-08-13 per the Databricks AI/BI release notes; ontology snippets are available to all customers (Public Preview, 2026-08-13). The 50+ connected systems come from the Flexera recap (secondary). Managed MCP server in Genie One: Beta (May 2026); GitHub MCP connection Beta (July 2026).
  • Import from Power BI and Tableau to dashboards: GA Aug 2026; Import BI files Public Preview July 2026. Custom Vega-Lite visuals Public Preview June 2026.
  • Governance: Genie runs with the asking user’s Unity Catalog permissions. Some features have regional limits (see Genie note).

Strengths and weaknesses vs peers

  • Strength (opinion): no data copy, governance inherited from Unity Catalog, close tie of dashboards, metrics and agents; migration importers from Power BI and Tableau.
  • Weakness (opinion): less mature visual and pixel-perfect reporting than Power BI, Tableau or Looker; assumes data in Databricks; compute cost per query. Peer warehouse-native option: Cortex Analyst.
