Fivetran

What it is

A managed ELT / data-movement service: pre-built, automatically maintained connectors replicate data from databases (including log-based CDC), SaaS apps, SAP, files and streams into warehouses, lakes and lakehouses. The vendor markets “750+” connectors and, since 2026, positions the company as “data infrastructure for trusted AI agents”. Company note: Fivetran (company).

Maker, ownership and history

  • Founded 2012 by George Fraser and Taylor Brown; Y Combinator 2013; HQ Oakland, California (Fivetran about page).
  • 2021-09-20: announced the acquisition of HVR (high-volume log-based CDC; about USD 700M in cash and stock) together with a USD 565M Series D led by Andreessen Horowitz at a USD 5.6B valuation, USD 730M raised to date (Fivetran press release). An earlier line here named Teleport Data as a 2021 acquisition; that is not in the HVR release or on any Fivetran page opened, so it was removed (see Open items).
  • 2023-05-18: USD 125M financing from Vista Credit Partners (Fivetran press release). 2024-09-27: surpassed USD 300M ARR, up from USD 200M in 2023 (Fivetran press release).
  • 2025-05-01: agreement to acquire Census (reverse ETL; terms undisclosed, cash and equity; Census co-founder Boris Jabes to help lead activation strategy); the Fivetran blog the same day presents Census as now rebranded Fivetran Activations. 2025-09-03: acquired Tobiko Data (SQLMesh and SQLGlot).
  • 2026-05-13: became steward of the Great Expectations open-source community and GX Core (Fivetran newsroom); GX Core stays open source and the release does not call it an acquisition (see great-expectations).
  • 2025-10-13: definitive agreement to merge with dbt Labs in an all-stock deal (Fivetran press release; combined ARR “approaching $600M” after close; commitment to keep dbt Core open under its current licence); 2026-06-01: completion announced (Fivetran press release, which cites 100,000+ data teams). Combined company “Fivetran + dbt Labs”, CEO George Fraser, President Tristan Handy. dbt and Fivetran remain separate product brands. See dbt (no dbt Labs company note exists yet).

Editions and deployment

Plans: Free, Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical (higher tiers add faster sync intervals, private networking, customer-managed keys). Usage billing is by Monthly Active Rows (MAR) for connections, per model run for transformations, MAR for activations; 14-day free trial per connection. Deployment: SaaS, hybrid (data plane in customer cloud) and a Managed Data Lake Service using open table formats. Pricing: https://www.fivetran.com/pricing

Core architecture

Closed-source SaaS control plane; connectors are managed by Fivetran (you do not run them). Incremental sync, schema-drift handling, CDC for databases. Destinations: major warehouses, Databricks, and open table formats (Iceberg/Delta) via the Managed Data Lake Service. Transformations via dbt integration; reverse ETL (“Activations”) via the Census-derived product line (agreement announced 2025-05-01).

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

The “land the data” layer: keeps operational data (CRM, ERP, databases) fresh in the lakehouse that RAG, feature stores and BI read from. CDC gives minutes-level freshness SLAs; schema-drift handling lowers pipeline breakage. See data-pipelines-for-ai.

AI features as of October 2026

  • 2026-09-16 (dbt Summit 2026 release): Fivetran Context Layer centralises data and metadata for agents using an open-source “Agents Schema”. Status labels differ by source: the press release says private beta, the Fivetran blog says limited public preview seeking design partners, and the docs page (fivetran.com/docs/context-layer.md, 2026-10-08) is tagged Public Preview; build time is stated as about a day. Its Agent Context MCP (docs page tagged Public Preview) is hosted at api.fivetran.ai/mcp, exposes execute_sql (read-only) and provide_feedback, and supports Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT and Codex.
  • Other items from the same release: dbt Wizard (public preview, coding agent); Lake Compute (private beta, DuckDB engine over Iceberg); dbt v2 and dbt State GA.
  • 2026-06-01 merger release also listed dbt Core v2.0 alpha (Fusion engine under Apache 2.0).
  • A general Fivetran MCP server for managing connectors: a Fivetran blog of 2025-11-07 says Fivetran “does not currently have an officially supported MCP Server” and shows community examples; no later official one was found in llms.txt.

Integrations

dbt (now same company), Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Iceberg/Delta lake formats; Databricks named it a 2026 ISV Customer Impact Partner of the Year (2026-06-16).

Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

Strong: least operational effort, broad maintained connector catalogue, mature CDC. Weak: MAR-based cost can climb with high-churn tables; closed source; limited custom-connector control compared with airbyte (open source) or code-first orchestration (dagster, apache-airflow).

Open items

  • Teleport Data acquisition (previously claimed, 2021): no primary page found after checking the HVR release, the press and blog sitemaps and guessed URLs; removed from the body.
  • Census deal completion date (the agreement release says closing was subject to conditions; a blog treats it as done).
  • Combined ARR: the 2025 release said approaching USD 600M after close; the 2026 completion release gave no ARR and cited 100,000+ data teams. Vendor claims.
  • Connector licensing details, certifications: unverified.
