Matillion (Data Productivity Cloud, Maia)

What it is

A cloud data-integration and transformation platform (ELT pushed down into the warehouse) that is now marketed as Maia by Matillion, an “AI data automation platform” of agents that build, test, run and fix pipelines. The earlier product, Data Productivity Cloud, is now branded Maia Foundation, the execution layer of Maia (maia.ai and matillion.com/products, fetched 2026-10-07).

Maker, ownership and history

Founded 2011 in Manchester, UK, by Matthew Scullion and Ed Thompson; offices in Denver and Manchester. Rounds: Series A YFM Equity Partners, B Sapphire and Scale, C Battery, D Lightspeed, E closed September 2022 at USD 1.5B valuation (matillion.com/about). Leadership change: on 2026-08-04 Matillion named Girish Pancha (founder of StreamSets, formerly Chief Product Officer at Informatica) as CEO and Sanjay Krishnamurthi as Chief Development Officer, with the dateline Manchester, UK and San Francisco (company news release on maia.ai). Independent as far as sourced; no acquirer found.

Editions and deployment

Data Productivity Cloud plans: Developer, Teams, Scale (Scale adds hybrid deployment, custom SSO, lineage, streaming CDC, bring-your-own Git). Consumption billing in credits by task hours. Free trials; marketplace purchase via AWS, Azure, Snowflake. SaaS and hybrid (agents run in customer VPC). Pricing: https://www.matillion.com/pricing

Core architecture

Low-code canvas plus SQL/Python; push-down transformations on Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, BigQuery; orchestration included; 150+ pre-built connectors listed on the Maia site. Proprietary, closed source.

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

Pipeline authoring for teams short on data engineers: Maia agents migrate, plan, build and test pipelines with human approval (“Mission Control”), and a Context Engine learns business context and governance standards. Handles unstructured sources as well as structured. See data-pipelines-for-ai.

AI features as of October 2026

Maia Team (agents), Context Engine, Foundation; autonomous schema-drift detection and remediation; test creation before deployment. Migration Agent was announced in public preview on 2026-03-26 (converts legacy ETL pipelines from 14 platforms, including Informatica PowerCenter, DataStage, SSIS, Oracle ODI, Alteryx and dbt, to native pipelines on Snowflake, Databricks and Amazon Redshift, flagging ambiguous constructs for human review). A “spring launch” post of 2026-05-21 extends Maia to migrations, builds, data quality and reverse ETL (vendor blog). Maia describes itself as available, “trusted by 1,000+ data teams” (vendor claim). MCP support and detailed GA/preview split: not found (unverified).

Integrations

Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, BigQuery, Salesforce, SAP, S3; peers fivetran, airbyte, Informatica IDMC, Talend.

Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

Strong: warehouse-native push-down ELT, agentic build assistance. Weak: closed, credit billing less predictable, smaller connector catalogue than Fivetran/Airbyte, brand transition (Matillion to Maia) adds confusion.
