Led the Architecture of Information Systems group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and was scientific director of the Data Science Center Eindhoven until December 2017. Chaired the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining, which produced the Process Mining Manifesto (2011; formal publication 2012). Research on workflow, Petri nets and process modelling preceded and led into process mining.

- Co-leadership of the XES event-log standard (IEEE 1849) and the OCEL 2.0 object-centric event-log standard (2023).
- Book: Process Mining: Data Science in Action, Springer, 2016.
