OpenAI Agents SDK

OpenAI’s open-source (MIT) framework for multi-agent workflows; described in its docs as a production-ready upgrade of the earlier Swarm project. Unaffected by the openai-agent-builder shutdown; it is the recommended migration target.

  • Languages: Python (pip install openai-agents, Python 3.10+; version 0.22.3 released 2026-09-17, still pre-1.0) and TypeScript (@openai/agents).
  • Core primitives: Agents (LLM + instructions + tools), Handoffs (delegation between agents), Guardrails (input/output validation).
  • Also: sessions (persistent memory), human-in-the-loop, built-in tracing, sandbox agents for isolated file/command work, realtime voice agents.
  • Protocols: MCP tool support in both SDKs (model-context-protocol). No A2A support was confirmed.
  • Related: openai-chatkit can front an Agents SDK backend; openai-agentkit was the wider suite it belonged to. Anthropic publishes a migration recipe from this SDK to claude-agent-sdk.
