Google Agent Development Kit (ADK)

Google’s open-source (Apache 2.0) framework for building, debugging and deploying agents, from Google; docs at adk.dev. Model-agnostic: works with Gemini and also Claude, OpenAI and other providers.

Languages and versions (checked 2026-10-02)

  • Python: google-adk 2.10.0 on PyPI (2026-09-25), Python 3.10+. ADK 2.0 GA: 2026-05-19.
  • Go: ADK Go 1.0 announced 2026-03-31 (Google Developers blog); ADK 2.0 GA for Go 2026-06-30 (import path changes to google.golang.org/adk/v2).
  • TypeScript: ADK 2.0 GA 2026-08-21.
  • Java: adk-java v1.10.1 (2026-09-18, GitHub releases); Kotlin is also listed on adk.dev.

ADK 2.0 (adk.dev/2.0)

Shift from a hierarchical agent executor to a graph-based execution engine: graph workflows (deterministic routing mixed with LLM steps), dynamic workflows (code-based loops and branching), and collaborative workflows (coordinator plus sub-agents). Agents now run as BaseNodes. Breaking changes: expanded event schema (node_info, output; custom session stores need migration), no direct event mutation (yield events from nodes), broad try/except disables automatic retries.

Other features

Context management (filtering, summarising older turns), plugins (e.g. Retry and Reflect), human-in-the-loop tool confirmation, OpenTelemetry tracing, YAML agent definitions (Go), Agents CLI and a web UI for building.

Deployment

Local/containers, or Google Cloud (Agent Runtime, Cloud Run, GKE).

MCP tools (model-context-protocol), A2A for cross-language agents (a2a-protocol), AG-UI (ag-ui). Compare langgraph, claude-agent-sdk, microsoft-agent-framework.
