Conduit (conduit-release)

Personal project of Jonathan Carter (GitHub handle lostintangent, who works at GitHub and earlier created Live Share, CodeTour and GitDoc). Repo description: “A terminal-centric workspace manager (a ‘DIY-DE’), that’s built for task parallelization with coding agents.” Homepage: https://trl.mx/conduit.

Not a GitHub product

The earlier version of this note listed github-company as the vendor. The repo belongs to a personal GitHub user account, and the README does not present Conduit as a GitHub product. It is an independent project by a GitHub employee. Do not confuse it with other “Conduit” projects (ConduitPlatform/Conduit backend framework, ConduitIO/conduit data streaming, LLNL Conduit HPC data library).

Facts (GitHub, accessed 2026-10-02)

  • Created 2025-11-15; last push 2026-03-12 (no activity for about 6.5 months; not archived); 232 stars.
  • macOS only at the time of checking; distributed via the repo’s releases page (-release repo, so the source is not published here).
  • No license is specified in the repository, so reuse rights are unclear.

What it does

  • Workspace of tabs, each a flexible grid of terminal, editor and browser panes (resizable, collapsible, cloneable), with tab overview and live status.
  • Agent sessions isolated per terminal, with automatic git worktree management, so several coding agents can work on one repo in parallel.
  • Local and cloud terminals side by side, for running tasks on local or remote compute.
  • Configurable coding agents recalled with slash commands from any terminal; customisable keybindings and a command palette; workspace save and restore.
  • Editor panes with file explorer, real-time git status, diffs and markdown preview; browser panes for testing; focus mode; synchronised terminal panes.

Positioning

A “DIY development environment” for people who prefer terminals but want several agents (Claude Code, Copilot CLI, others) running at once. Similar ideas: herdr (terminal multiplexer that tracks agent state), wesight (GUI front end) and multi-agent-systems patterns. Whether it is still maintained is unclear given the last push date.
