GitHub Agent HQ

By GitHub (Microsoft). Announced at GitHub Universe on 2025-10-28 as “mission control” for coding agents from several vendors inside the GitHub workflow. It extends github-copilot rather than being a separate product.

What it is

  • Mission control: one view across github.com, VS Code, GitHub Mobile and the CLI to assign work to agents in parallel, track progress and steer them (the Copilot agents page also lists assignment from Issues, Azure Boards, Jira, Linear, Slack and Teams).
  • Custom agents / rules: source-controlled AGENTS.md files in VS Code to set rules and guardrails (agents-md).
  • Launch extras (2025): Plan Mode in VS Code, GitHub MCP Registry integration, Code Quality and Copilot metrics dashboard (public preview), an agent control plane for enterprise governance.
  • Security: Copilot-generated code is checked with GitHub secret protection, code security and supply-chain tools before PR review.

Availability timeline

  • 2025-10-28: partner agents from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Cognition and xAI promised “over the coming months”; OpenAI Codex first, for Copilot Pro+ in VS Code Insiders.
  • 2026-02-04: Claude (Anthropic) and Codex (OpenAI) coding agents in public preview on github.com, Mobile and VS Code for Copilot Pro+ and Enterprise; included in the existing subscription, one premium request per session during preview (GitHub changelog).
  • 2026-02-26: extended to Copilot Business and Pro (per a changelog entry seen via search; page not opened).
  • 2026-04-14: model selection for the Claude and Codex agents on github.com (same: changelog seen via search, not opened).
  • Current (copilot agents page, 2026-10-02): tasks consume GitHub Actions minutes and AI Credits (usage-metered billing; see github-copilot); a free tier exists.

Open items

  • The 2026-02-04 changelog (re-fetched 2026-10-05) names only Claude and Codex. Whether Google (Jules), Cognition (Devin) and xAI agents actually shipped in Agent HQ: only the 2025 promise was found, no changelog confirming availability.
  • Exact current per-plan limits and AI Credit rates not checked (see the GitHub pricing page).
