Google Apigee MCP gateway features

What it is

MCP support in Google Apigee: Apigee exposes your existing APIs as MCP tools through managed endpoints, so agents can call them without you running MCP servers. Google’s release notes say any MCP client that supports remote MCP endpoints over HTTP/S can use them.

Maker and licence

Google Cloud; closed, managed product (Apigee X, plus Apigee hybrid for a Kubernetes runtime). See Alphabet.

Position

API gateway with MCP (API management platform extended to agent tool traffic). Apigee routes, authorizes and secures MCP tool calls the same way as other APIs.

Capabilities (per Google release notes)

  • Managed MCP endpoints in front of Apigee API products; MCP discovery proxies; the tools/list method aggregates tools across all approved API products (fix noted in the hybrid v1.17.1 notes dated 2026-09-30).
  • Tool configuration from OpenAPI specifications (server URL path handling refined on 2026-03-31).
  • API hub MCP server: agents can discover, query and manage APIs, versions, specs and deployments, and configure MCP discovery proxies.
  • Insights: tool performance reports for MCP tools with filters for MCP server, deployment and tool name; separate LLM token-usage reports.
  • Related preview (not an MCP feature): API hub plugins ingesting AWS API Gateway and Azure API Management metadata (Public Preview, 2026-09-23).

MCP spec support

Not stated on the release-notes pages read.

Maturity (dated)

  • MCP in Apigee: generally available from the 2026-03-31 Apigee release, for Subscription, Pay-as-you-go and Evaluation organizations, including Data Residency and VPC Service Controls organizations.
  • Apigee hybrid: MCP support added in v1.17.0 (released 2026-09-14), optional and disabled by default.
  • API hub MCP server: GA on 2026-07-24.
  • Cloud API Registry (central API catalog that imports Apigee API hub metadata): labelled Preview on its overview page, 2026-10-08.

Fit and limits (opinion)

Strong fit if you already govern APIs in Apigee; heavy for teams only needing an MCP proxy.

Pricing

Apigee billing models (subscription, pay-as-you-go, evaluation); see the Google Cloud Apigee pricing page.
