How BI tools use AI (state as of summer 2026, checked 2026-10-05)
Synthesis of the per-tool notes in this folder. Each tool note has the feature-level detail, the GA / preview / announced status and its sources; this page only pulls out the pattern. Most vendor sites blocked automated fetching, so many feature statuses rest on release-note pages, press releases and secondary coverage: treat any “GA” here as “reported GA” and confirm in the vendor’s current release notes before relying on it.
What changed since 2024: five patterns
- Natural-language questions on a governed semantic layer. Most of the vendors covered in this folder describe a plain-language question feature, per their documentation as summarised in the tool notes: Power BI (AI instructions, verified answers), Looker (LookML-grounded Conversational Analytics, verified queries), Tableau (Tableau Semantics, Pulse, Concierge), ThoughtSpot (Spotter Semantics), Qlik (Qlik Answers on the associative engine), Snowflake (semantic views) and Databricks (Genie). (Opinion) The semantic model, descriptions and curated example questions are likely a main lever for answer quality; no benchmark backs this.
- From chat to agents. Several vendors describe agents that monitor, plan multi-step analysis, or take actions: Qlik Discovery Agent, Sigma Agents (analyse / automate / act with human approval), Databricks Genie Agents (renamed from Genie Spaces; agent mode GA on 2026-07-02 and its APIs GA on 2026-08-27 per the Databricks AI/BI release notes), Power BI standalone Copilot and Fabric data agents, Looker Dashboard Agents (preview), IBM Cognos report and data-query agents, Oracle AI Data Agents. Several of the newest agent features are still preview or beta.
- MCP everywhere. Many of the tools covered here are reported to offer an MCP server so external assistants can query governed data (statuses as stated in each tool note, not re-verified here): Power BI (Fabric IQ MCP GA, consumption and authoring servers), Tableau MCP (open source), Looker (managed server in preview plus MCP Toolbox), Qlik MCP (GA 2026-02-10 per Qlik’s own press release), ThoughtSpot Agentic MCP, Sigma, Strategy, Metabase (built in), Apache Superset (opt-in), Lightdash, Sisense (beta), Zoho, Oracle (preview), Grafana. See looker-mcp-server.
- AI that builds the BI itself. Coding agents author models and dashboards: Power BI Agent Skills and the authoring MCP server, Looker’s LookML agent in VS Code (preview), Sigma Skills, Migration Skills and Workbooks as Code, Hex’s notebook agent, Databricks Genie Code for dashboards, Tableau Agent for authoring and prep. Some vendor documentation warns about irreversible changes; (opinion) keeping models in Git (PBIP, LookML, YAML) is prudent.
- Consolidation and renaming. Mode was reportedly folded into ThoughtSpot’s Analyst Studio (mode-analytics; not verified); Domo’s AI and data platform business was sold to Progress Software (announced 2026-07-22, completed 2026-09-22, agreement 2026-07-22 and completion 2026-09-22 confirmed in SEC 8-K filings, see the Domo note), see domo-platform; QlikView 12.90 reaches end of support on 2026-10-31 and 12.100 on 2027-09-30 (Qlik lifecycle page, see Qlik); Google renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio on 2026-04-16 (looker-studio); Snowflake’s docs list “Snowflake CoWork” with General availability on 2025-11-04 (see Snowflake).
Gating and risks to check before adopting
- Licence / capacity gating. Power BI Copilot needs paid Fabric F2+ or Premium P1+ capacity and is not supported on trial SKUs (Microsoft Learn, page updated 2026-07-23); sovereign-cloud availability is not verified; per the tool notes (not re-verified here), Tableau’s Agent features sit in higher editions, Zoho’s Ask Zia agent needs a higher tier, and Metabase’s Cloud AI Service and Lightdash agents are add-ons.
- Data movement and residency. Several features send prompts or metadata to a model provider (Power BI: Azure OpenAI with regional caveats; Databricks Genie agent mode needs cross-geo processing in some regions). Tools with bring-your-own-LLM: Sisense, IBM Cognos, Sigma (Claude beta), Metabase.
- Governance. MCP and agents inherit the user’s permissions in Power BI, Sigma and Tableau; check row-level security behaviour on each platform.
- Maturity. Treat anything “preview”, “beta” or “announced” as a roadmap item, not a capability.

Verification log (2026-10-07)
- CONFIRMED-PRIMARY: Looker Studio rebranded Data Studio on 2026-04-16, and Data Studio release notes list Conversational Analytics as generally available in July 2026 (Google Cloud docs release notes).
- CONFIRMED-PRIMARY: Power BI Copilot requires paid Fabric F2+ or Premium P1+ capacity (or a Fabric Copilot capacity), is not supported on trial SKUs, is unsupported with Private Link, and may need the cross-geo setting where Azure OpenAI is unavailable in the region; the standalone Copilot is labelled preview and has been on by default since September 2025 (Microsoft Learn, page updated 2026-07-23). The note’s “not in sovereign clouds” and “Pro alone is not enough” are consistent with the capacity rule but sovereign clouds are not named on that page.
- CONFIRMED-PRIMARY: Databricks AI/BI release notes (rechecked 2026-10-07): “Agent mode in Genie Agents (formerly Genie Spaces) is now generally available” (2026-07-02) and “The Agent mode APIs for Genie Agents are now generally available” (2026-08-27). An earlier check in this log that failed to find these entries was wrong.
- CONFIRMED-PRIMARY: SEC 8-K filings (read by the data-layer verification, 2026-10-07) confirm the Domo asset sale agreement on 2026-07-22, completion on 2026-09-22 and the rename to Huckleberry.ai, Inc.; the price is “approximately $400 million” aggregate, subject to adjustment.
- CONFIRMED-PRIMARY (second pass): Qlik MCP server GA on 2026-02-10 (Qlik press release); QlikView 12.90 end of support 2026-10-31 and 12.100 on 2027-09-30 (Qlik lifecycle page, see Qlik).
- UNVERIFIED this pass: Mode folded into ThoughtSpot Analyst Studio (the ThoughtSpot acquisition agreement was announced 2023-06-26 per TechCrunch and Wikipedia), and the per-tool rows not listed above; see the linked tool notes for their own sources.
Open items
- Preview vs GA claims for Build 2026, Tableau TC26, Qlik April 2026 and Oracle MCP were not confirmed against primary vendor pages (403/404 on many).
- No independent benchmark of answer accuracy across these assistants was found; do not infer quality from feature lists.
- The yt-base video summaries were not available on this machine, so no vault video links are included.
