Trae IDE (TraeCode / TraeWork)

AI-native IDE and agent suite that bytedance launched in 2025 as a free Cursor-style editor. Site: trae.ai (the original note’s trai.ai was a typo).

Status 2026 (verified 2026-10-02)

  • Branding: trae.ai now presents an umbrella “TRAE” page with two desktop downloads: TraeCode (“AI coding engineer”, the IDE and SOLO modes) and TraeWork (“AI work assistant” for non-coding work, web at work.trae.ai). A search-result summary of GitHub issue benjamincanac/whichcodingtools#105 says the IDE brand moved to TraeCode in August 2026 and that “TRAE SOLO became TRAE Work” in June 2026. Sources differ on SOLO: Pandaily (secondary) reported a standalone SOLO launch on 2026-04-01, which the issue’s timeline does not mention. The exact old-to-new mapping is not confirmed by a first-party page.
  • Ownership: ByteDance publishes the open-source bytedance/trae-agent CLI agent (MIT, about 12k stars, multi-LLM support), and press (Pandaily, Yahoo Tech, Hacker News coverage, Baidu Baike) describes TRAE as ByteDance’s AI IDE. The trae.ai pages fetched do not state ownership themselves. Enterprise sales go via BytePlus (ByteDance’s cloud arm).
  • Plans (trae.ai/pricing, fetched 2026-10-02): Free (Auto mode only, limited usage, 5,000 autocompletes per month); Pro (Auto and all models, unlimited autocomplete, up to 10 concurrent cloud tasks); Pro+ (more usage, 15 tasks); Ultra (most usage, model early access, 20 tasks); annual discount about 17% (previous check); enterprise via BytePlus. Third-party reviews list different tier levels, probably older or promotional. Current prices: see https://www.trae.ai/pricing.

What it is

  • Desktop editor for macOS and Windows per the trae.ai downloads; described in 2025 press as a VS Code-style fork with a free tier.
  • SOLO mode: a “context engineer” that plans from PRD-style specs, runs terminal commands, edits files, tests and deploys inside one workspace.
  • Trae Agent CLI: open-source terminal agent (bytedance/trae-agent).
  • Community guide: “Our Guide to Master Context in Trae” on r/Trae_ai.

Limits

The mapping of the old TRAE IDE/SOLO names to TraeCode/TraeWork rests on a GitHub issue timeline (via search listing) and press (Pandaily, 2026-04-01); ByteDance ownership is stated by press and the open-source bytedance/trae-agent repo, not by trae.ai itself.
