Cloudflare MCP Server Portals, AI Gateway and remote MCP hosting
Cloudflare (Cloudflare) offers three distinct pieces.
AI gateway vs MCP gateway: AI Gateway is the LLM-traffic product (model calls). MCP server portals are the MCP gateway (tool servers). Remote MCP hosting is where you build servers; neither gateway.
1. MCP server portals (MCP gateway)
Part of Cloudflare Access (Zero Trust). Per docs, a portal centralises multiple MCP servers onto one HTTP endpoint (https://<host>/mcp). Features: access policies per server and per portal; logs of time, status, server, tool, duration (Logpush export on Enterprise); tool curation (hide, allowlist, rename, Code Mode / optimize_context); up to 80 servers per portal; remote HTTP servers only; needs a Cloudflare domain and a Zero Trust identity provider. Note: per-server MFA and purpose justification are not enforced for servers authorised through a portal. GA/beta label: not stated on the page. SaaS product, no self-hosting.
2. AI Gateway (LLM gateway)
Docs: observe and control AI apps with analytics (requests, tokens, cost), logging, caching, rate limiting, retries and model fallback; providers include Workers AI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenAI, Replicate. Page states “available on all plans” (last updated 2026-04-20). Compare PortKey, agentgateway.
3. Remote MCP hosting on Workers
Docs: remote servers over Streamable HTTP at /mcp, deployed with Wrangler templates, OAuth via Cloudflare Access or third-party providers (OAuthProvider). The guide marks the McpAgent (Durable Object, stateful) path as deprecated for new servers in favour of createMcpHandler(). Open-source cloudflare/mcp-server-cloudflare (Apache-2.0, about 4,362 stars on 2026-10-08) provides Cloudflare’s own MCP servers.
AAIF membership
The vault note agentic-ai-foundation lists Cloudflare among launch platinum members; that claim is not re-checked here.
Fit and limits (opinion)
