AtScale

What it is

AtScale is a commercial “universal semantic layer” platform that says it standardises metric definitions across BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker), cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery and others) and AI systems, without moving data (vendor claim, atscale.com, fetched 2026-10-07).

Maker and history

AtScale says it “introduced the first cloud-ready semantic layer in 2013” and was “founded by veterans of the Yahoo data team” (About page, opened 2026-10-07). Chris Lynch is CEO and Executive Chairman (team page, opened 2026-10-07). Dave Mariani is named CTO and Founder in the 2024-06-04 Snowflake Native App release, which also gives San Francisco as the location (an earlier release, the 2018 Series D, said San Mateo). Funding (company releases): USD 50M Series D led by Morgan Stanley, announced 2018-12-12, with Storm Ventures, Wells Fargo and Atlantic Bridge as existing backers. Later rounds were not opened.

Editions and deployment

Commercial platform (also offered as a Snowflake Native App since 2024-06-04); SML (Semantic Modeling Language) is open source: AtScale released it on 2024-09-10 under the Apache licence as a YAML-based modeling language (metrics, dimensions, hierarchies, relationships), repo github.com/semanticdatalayer/SML (GitHub API: Apache-2.0, created 2024-08-26, 176 stars, pushed 2026-10-02). The earlier guess github.com/semanticlayer/sml was the wrong owner. The platform itself is closed source. Pricing model not verified.

Core architecture

Virtualised semantic layer: models define metrics/dimensions/hierarchies; queries from SQL, MDX and BI tools are rewritten to the warehouse, with automatic aggregates. (Product description, vendor claim.) MDX/DAX endpoint support was not confirmed on any page opened and is left to Open items.

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

Governed metric context for agents and text-to-SQL; positioned for “agentic analytics”. See semantic-layers-compared.

AI features as of October 2026

  • MCP server: AtScale press release of 2025-12-01 announces its MCP Server in the Databricks MCP Marketplace for agents backed by governed semantic models, stated as generally available (company release). The product page for Claude shows “AI Context and MCP” but no detail.
  • Open Semantic Interchange: AtScale announced it joined OSI on 2026-01-27 (company release; OSI is the Snowflake-led open-source standards effort, see open-semantic-interchange); SML is cited as an input to the standard.
  • Microsoft: an AtScale blog (page dated September 2026, written by the vendor, so a competitor-side view) says Microsoft joined the Apache Ossie ecosystem, contributed a Power BI/Fabric converter to the Ossie GitHub repository and wants DAX recognised as an Ossie query language. The Microsoft side was not opened, so treat as vendor-reported.

Integrations

Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery (as named on the vendor site). Relationship to dbt models: not verified.

Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

Strength (vendor positioning): tool-agnostic. Weakness: closed and commercial; may overlap with the semantic features now native to warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks).
