Tableau
What it is
Tableau is a visual analytics / business intelligence product family owned by Salesforce. Classic Tableau (Desktop, Cloud, Server, Prep, Public) is drag-and-drop visual analysis. Since 2024-2025 Salesforce has layered AI and an “agentic analytics” pitch on top: Tableau Pulse, Tableau Agent, and a separate newer platform, Tableau Next, built on the Salesforce platform and Data 360.
Maker and history
- Founded January 2003 in Mountain View by Pat Hanrahan, Christian Chabot and Chris Stolte (Wikipedia, secondary, re-read 2026-10-07; an earlier version of this note also named Andrew Beers, which that page does not list), from the Stanford “Polaris” visualization research. NYSE IPO 2013-05-17 (ticker DATA; Wikipedia).
- Salesforce announced the acquisition on 2019-06-10 (Wikipedia; the merger agreement date 2019-06-09 is from the earlier Salesforce 10-Q read, not re-checked) and completed it on 2019-08-01 (Salesforce press release, opened 2026-10-07; it also notes the UK CMA reviewed the deal and the companies stayed operationally separate meanwhile). Exchange ratio 1.103 Salesforce shares per Tableau share; preliminary consideration about USD 14.9 billion (Salesforce 10-Q; Wikipedia quotes 15.7 billion headline value). Tableau became a wholly owned Salesforce subsidiary.
- Tableau Next announced 2025-04-15 (Salesforce newsroom, opened 2026-10-07); Tableau Conference 2026 took place in San Diego (Keyrus recap; dates not stated there, see Open items).

Data connectivity and modelling
Dozens of connectors, live or extract (Hyper) connections, relationships and joins in the data model. Analytical language: calculated fields, table calculations and Level of Detail (LOD) expressions (FIXED / INCLUDE / EXCLUDE). Tableau Next differs: it uses Tableau Semantics (a semantic layer in Data 360) with zero-copy access to warehouses, rather than workbook-embedded logic.
Deployment
Tableau Cloud (SaaS), Tableau Server (self-managed), embedded analytics, Tableau Public (hosted, public), Tableau Next (Salesforce platform).
AI features (as of 2026-10-05; status in brackets)
- Tableau Pulse: generative-AI insight summaries on metrics, trends/outliers/drivers. GA announced 2024-02-22 (Salesforce newsroom, opened 2026-10-07), included in all Tableau Cloud editions and embedded analytics, running through the Einstein Trust Layer; Cloud only per Salesforce docs.
- Tableau Agent: conversational analysis, prep and authoring help; Cloud+ edition / Tableau+ bundle include it in Prep, authoring, Catalog, dashboards and Pulse (Tableau help text via search; check edition page before relying).
- Tableau Agent in Pulse (formerly Enhanced Q&A): an earlier version of this note cited TC26 coverage of GPT 5.2 with a 400,000-token context; that claim was not found in the Keyrus or Coastal Cloud recaps and is moved to Open items.
- Tableau Next components, announced 2025-04-15: Tableau Next with the Tableau+ SKU and Tableau Semantics (both GA at launch), Data Pro (data prep assistant, June 2025), Concierge (natural-language Q&A agent, June 2025), Inspector (continuous monitoring of trends and anomalies, “2025”), Internal Marketplace (“2025”). Early adopters named: Deloitte, IBM, Box. These were stated as roadmap dates in April 2025; later status not verified.
- TC26 announcements per secondary recaps (Keyrus, Coastal Cloud): Tableau MCP (GA; surfaces governed answers in Claude, ChatGPT, Slack, Salesforce, Teams), Composable Data Sources (GA June 2026), Auto Knowledge Graph (GA July 2026), Conversational Analytics (live), Agentified Actions (Beta), Auto Mode (in development, not beta; corrected 2026-10-07 from the Coastal Cloud recap), Agent Health Monitor (shipped). Treat statuses as partner-recap claims, not Tableau primary pages.
- Agentforce relationship: Tableau Next ships “analytical skills” for Agentforce agents; Salesforce says Data 360 must be provisioned for Agentforce use.
- Tableau MCP server: https://github.com/tableau/tableau-mcp, Apache-2.0 (npm registry metadata; the GitHub API reported no licence field), Node.js 22.7.5+ for npx (README), npm
@tableau/mcp-server(first published 2025-09-16, latest 4.18.1 on 2026-10-07), managed hosted option at https://mcp.tableau.com using OAuth 2.1 for Tableau Cloud, self-host via npx/Docker (README); Tableau Server customers have an enterprise deployment path. The conference recaps cited above name Claude, ChatGPT and Slack as MCP clients (secondary). - Dreamforce 2025/2026: a vendor-note page (Info-Tech) lists Tableau Semantics, Auto Knowledge Graph, Agent Actions, Agentic Analytics Command Center and “headless analytics” into Slack, Teams and Claude for Dreamforce 2026, with no GA status per feature. Salesforce’s own Dreamforce 2026 IT roundup did not mention Tableau.
Data 360 relationship
Data 360 is the new name of Salesforce Data Cloud. Tableau Next integrates with it for zero-copy data, prep and semantics; Tableau Semantics is described as the semantic layer for Data 360 and Agentforce. Classic Tableau Desktop/Cloud/Server remain independent of Data 360.
Strengths and weaknesses (opinion, no single source)
- Strengths (opinion): exploratory visual analysis, an established community, Public gallery, chart flexibility.
- Weaknesses: complex product and edition naming (classic vs Next, Cloud vs Cloud+ vs Tableau+); strongest AI features tied to higher editions and Salesforce data platform; Pulse not on Server. Compare Looker Studio, microsoft-fabric-terminology-guide, Looker MCP server.
