What it is

Per the vendor, Sigma is a closed-source, cloud-only analytics platform that works directly on live data in a cloud warehouse through a spreadsheet-style interface, with dashboards, apps and AI agents (announced 2026-04-08) on top. Not to be confused with the Sigma browser in Sigma (AI browser). Company note: Sigma Computing (company). Peers: Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Hex, ThoughtSpot.

Maker and history

Sigma Computing; co-founders Jason Frantz and Rob Woollen (vendor about page). SEC EDGAR shows the company was formerly Bitmoon Computing, Inc. with filings under that name through 2014-04-24 (so the Wikipedia claim of a 2024 rename is wrong). See the company note for funding.

Products and editions

Free trial exists (QuickStarts site). Edition names and pricing: the vendor pricing URL redirects to a contact-sales page (checked 2026-10-05), so tiers were not verified; no prices recorded.

Data connectivity and modelling

No extracts: queries run as SQL in the customer’s warehouse (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, ClickHouse and others named in vendor material). Spreadsheet-like formulas, Data Models as a governed semantic layer, and Input Tables for governed writeback into the warehouse; Input Tables: generally available for Google BigQuery (vendor blog 2026-01-29); a Postgres Input Tables post is dated 2026-03-31 (GA label not checked). In the July 2026 notes, Sigma Tables on Databricks Lakebase were listed as private beta, rolling out by connection.

Deployment

Cloud SaaS only; embedding supported; “Sigma Tenants” (isolated organizations with a shared parent) GA in the August 2026 release notes.

AI features as of 2026-10-05

  • Sigma Assistant: natural-language building of workbooks, dashboards and apps. The July 2026 post says building features are “still in beta”; Assistant build mode is GA, announced 2026-10-07 (vendor blog “sigma-assistant-build-mode”).
  • AI Query / AI Column: LLM prompt run per row (classify, extract, summarise). AI Column is described as shipped in the July 2026 post (no GA/beta label seen).
  • Sigma Agents: autonomous or conversational agents inside workbooks; announced 2026-04-08 (vendor blog); GA announced 2026-09-29 (“Sigma Agents are now GA … generally available for all customers”, vendor blog sigma-agents-enterprise-scale; the July 2026 post only said “reaching every customer”). Three modes: analyse, automate (scheduled monitoring), act (human-in-the-loop approval, e.g. draft into an Input Table, then push to Salesforce or HubSpot). Agents mirror the user’s permissions; the vendor lists five security layers and states AI runs on warehouse compute.
  • Warehouse agents as tools (Snowflake Cortex agents, Databricks Genie spaces can be orchestrated by a Sigma Agent) and an AI usage dashboard for every customer plus cost-monitoring templates (Claude, ChatGPT, Snowflake Cortex): described as shipped in July 2026.
  • Agent Builder Assistant (drafts an agent from plain language): shipped in the July “Month of Agents”; beta status not explicitly labelled on the page.
  • August 2026 release: Claude (own Anthropic API key) powering Assistant, Agents, Formula Assistant and Explain this Chart: public beta (Anthropic models are not available for embedding configurations). Sigma Skills and Migration Skills (teach coding agents to build in Sigma and to migrate legacy content): described as built on Workbooks as Code; their own status is not stated. Workbooks as Code (YAML workbook spec): private beta (earlier note said public beta, corrected). Sigma CLI GA on macOS, Linux and Windows. Bulk insert into Input Tables: public beta. Webhook triggers: public beta. MCP Server upgrades (design-to-dashboard, plus a Sigma plugin for Claude, Codex and Cursor): “still in development” (earlier note said private beta, corrected).
  • MCP: a Sigma MCP server lets external assistants (including Claude) connect; the vendor claims a working app can be built from one request via MCP and CLI (not independently tested).
  • Not verified: LLM providers behind default features, per-tier entitlements, data-residency terms.

Strengths and weaknesses vs peers

  • Vendor positioning (not independently assessed): spreadsheet UX for business users, governed writeback, warehouse-native AI.
  • Weakness (opinion): cloud-only, depends on a supported warehouse. Several newest AI features were labelled beta in the vendor’s August 2026 release notes.
