What it is

Maker, ownership and history

Vendor note: Snowflake. Founded 2012; Sridhar Ramaswamy CEO since Feb 2024 (Wikipedia, secondary). Acquisitions per Wikipedia: Neeva (May 2023), Crunchy Data (June 2025, about $250M, Postgres), Observe (Jan 2026, observability). Snowflake announced a convertible notes offering on 2026-09-28 (press page).

Core architecture

Separation of storage and compute (virtual warehouses); native tables plus Apache Iceberg tables (partition evolution GA 2026-09-18); catalog-linked databases and external tables; Snowflake Open Catalog is a managed Apache Polaris, GA, but accounts for new customers are no longer offered and Snowflake points to Horizon Catalog (docs). Snowflake Postgres runs Postgres instances on dedicated VMs managed by Snowflake, documented as GA.

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

Governed structured and unstructured data close to the models: Cortex AI functions run LLMs next to the data, Horizon provides the context layer (semantic views, lineage) and enforces masking and guardrails for humans and agents alike; Openflow brings in source data; Postgres serves operational apps.
