SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC)

What it is

SAP’s managed data layer for business data: SAP data products, Datasphere, Business Warehouse and SAP Analytics Cloud under one semantic foundation, with zero-copy sharing to partner platforms and SAP’s Joule agents on top.

Maker, ownership and history

SAP SE. SAP announced Business Data Cloud on 2025-02-13, built with Databricks, which is natively embedded for data engineering, machine learning and AI workloads (SAP News press release, primary). The 2025 annual report (Form 20-F) describes BDC as the data platform across the SAP cloud portfolio and lists Datasphere, Business Warehouse, Intelligent Applications, the SAP Databricks capability and BDC Connect as components, and says SAP released hundreds of prebuilt SAP-managed data products in 2025. Later additions: BDC Connect for Google BigQuery and for Databricks (announced 2025-10-06, 20-F), SAP Snowflake solution extension and BDC Connect for Snowflake (announced 2025-11-04, TechEd Berlin, per SAP News and the 20-F), BDC Connect for Microsoft Fabric (SAP News 2025-11-18). SAP News, May 2026: SAP HANA Cloud is a core component and the AI database of BDC, SAP completed the acquisition of Reltio (completion announced 2026-05-07; multi-domain master data), SAP Master Data Governance is a core component, and deeper SAP AI Core integration allows batch inference embedded in data products. A May 2026 SAP News post says BDC is generally available on AWS in several regions (including N. Virginia and Frankfurt) and in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

Role in an enterprise AI rollout

SAP positions BDC as giving agents governed, semantically described SAP data via zero-copy sharing (vendor positioning; scope of data domains and grounding not verified here).

AI features as of 2026-10-08 (SAP News, 2026-05; mostly announced)

  • Joule agents: data product search and creation, planning and analytical modelling, insight generation, automatic SAC story generation.
  • BDC Connect for Amazon Athena: “General availability is planned for H2 2026” (SAP News 2026-05-14, primary); GA not confirmed since.
  • SAP Knowledge Graph underpins Joule’s understanding of relationships and processes (SAP News 2026-05); SAP Business AI Platform: see SAC note (not rechecked).

Integrations

Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

Strengths (vendor positioning): SAP semantics built in. Weaknesses (opinion): SAP-centric; many items are announced rather than GA per the SAP News posts; BARC (2026, secondary, not opened) is reported to call production readiness of some scenarios unproven.
