SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) and SAP Business Data Cloud

What it is

SAP’s cloud-only BI, planning and predictive analytics product: stories (dashboards), analytic applications, financial and business planning, and predictive scenarios in one SaaS tenant. It is the front end of SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC), SAP’s data layer that combines SAP data products, SAP Datasphere, and partner platforms (Databricks and others). Joule is SAP’s AI copilot/agent layer, announced (SAP News, 2026-05) to extend into SAC and BDC.

Maker and history

  • Maker: SAP. The product started in 2015 as “SAP Cloud for Planning”, gained a BI layer, was renamed SAP BusinessObjects Cloud (2016) and SAP Analytics Cloud (2017) (secondary sources: TechTarget/Talan via search, see Sources).
  • 2026: at SAP Sapphire (May 2026) SAP announced the SAP Business AI Platform, merging the AI foundation with BDC and the Business Technology Platform (SAPinsider, via search summary; verify on sap.com).
  • BARC (2026) describes SAC as gradually shifting to BDC/Datasphere storage while still keeping its own data store during the transition.

Products and editions

  • SAC is subscription SaaS; BDC is positioned as the data layer around it. Licence/SKU names, trial and prices: see sap.com, not verified or recorded here (see Open items).
  • Related components: SAP Datasphere (data modelling and data products), Data Product Studio (GA planned H1 2026 per BARC; status not re-checked), SAP BusinessObjects (on-premise legacy BI, separate lineage).

Data connectivity and modelling

  • Data models are built in SAC or in Datasphere. “Seamless Planning” (SAC planning on Datasphere) was GA since Q1 2025 (BARC).
  • BDC adds zero-copy sharing: Databricks integration live Oct 2025 (BARC); BDC Connect for Amazon Athena planned H2 2026; BigQuery and Snowflake were scheduled for H1 2026 in BARC’s roadmap (not re-verified).
  • No DAX/LookML-style open semantic-layer language was found in the sources; modelling appears GUI-driven (opinion).

Deployment

SAP-operated cloud SaaS (BARC and SAP describe it as cloud product); on-premise SAP BI is the separate BusinessObjects line. Embedding in SAP applications not verified here.

AI features as of summer 2026

  • Joule in SAC (as of May 2026): natural-language questions answered as charts/metrics, and story generation from a data model. SAP’s BDC announcement lists Joule agents for data product search/creation, planning and analytical modelling, insight generation and automatic dashboard (story) generation, plus SAP Knowledge Graph for relationships. Status: announced, no per-feature GA dates in the post (SAP News, 2026-05).
  • Joule Studio (announced Sapphire May 2026): managed platform to build agents; design-time access free to SAP customers/partners through end of 2026 under fair-use limits; works with SAP Knowledge Graph and BDC (SAP News).
  • SAP Autonomous Suite: 50+ Joule assistants and 200+ agents across business processes (press-reported from Sapphire 2026 coverage, not verified; mostly outside BI).
  • BDC items: SAP HANA Cloud as AI database (vector/graph), Reltio MDM entity resolution, SAP AI Core batch inference in data products, BDC Connect for Athena (planned H2 2026).
  • MCP/A2A: BARC lists system-triggered agents and agent-to-agent communication as announced for 2026; no verified SAC MCP server found.
  • Licence/AI-unit requirements and tenant-region support for Joule features: not verified (see Open items).

Strengths and weaknesses vs peers

  • Strength (opinion, BARC 2026): tight SAP integration and unified BI + planning + predictive in one product.
  • Weakness (BARC 2026): own data store alongside BDC creates redundancy during transition; production readiness of BDC scenarios “still unproven”. Visual freedom and community content are smaller than Power BI, Tableau or Qlik (opinion, not sourced).
  • Manufacturing angle: SAP-centred plants use SAC for KPI reporting on S/4HANA data; see use-of-bi-in-moms (generic BI-in-MOMS overview) and business-intelligence (vault note, low detail) for background.
