Snowflake Intelligence / CoWork and Cortex Analyst
What it is
Snowflake’s native, no-copy conversational analytics stack. Cortex Analyst is the managed LLM feature that answers business questions in natural language over structured data using semantic views; Cortex Agents orchestrate Analyst (structured), Cortex Search (unstructured) and tools; Snowflake Intelligence is the ready-made agent application for business users. At Snowflake Summit 2026 (2026-06-01 to 06-04, San Francisco) Intelligence was rebranded Snowflake CoWork (Atlan recap; Snowflake docs now use the CoWork name). CoWork generates “Artifacts” (shareable governed dashboards with live data); Snowflake data is also commonly read by Tableau, Power BI and Streamlit apps.
Maker and history
- Maker: Snowflake Inc.. Cortex Analyst reportedly entered preview in August 2024 (search summary, not checked in docs). Semantic views: preview 2025-04-17; Snowsight object-explorer management GA 2025-10-02. Cortex Agents GA 2025-11-04; Snowflake docs list “Snowflake CoWork (General availability)” on 2025-11-04, and secondary sources report Snowflake Intelligence GA in November 2025.
- Semantic View Autopilot GA (2026-02-03) and standard SQL querying of semantic views GA (2026-03-02) are reported by a secondary source only; not checked in docs.
Products and editions
Consumption-billed features inside a Snowflake account (Cortex Analyst is billed per message processed per the docs; see Snowflake’s pricing pages). Access needs the database role SNOWFLAKE.CORTEX_USER or SNOWFLAKE.CORTEX_ANALYST_USER. Snowflake also offers an iOS app for CoWork (docs).
Data connectivity and modelling
Semantic views (logical tables, dimensions, facts, metrics, relationships) are the recommended model; older YAML semantic models on stages still work. Data stays in Snowflake; Horizon Catalog governs. Horizon Context (private preview per Atlan’s Summit 2026 recap) adds metadata collection from external sources (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Tableau, Power BI, dbt), lineage, AI-generated documentation and automatic semantic view discovery.
Deployment
Snowflake-managed SaaS on AWS, Azure and GCP regions. Cortex Analyst is natively available in nine AWS/Azure regions; cross-region inference lets other regions use it (docs), which matters for data-residency reviews.
AI features as of summer 2026
- Snowflake CoWork (GA per Atlan Summit 2026 recap): deep research, artifacts, user memory, user skills and skill catalog, extensions to iOS, Slack and Excel, external integrations (Google Drive, Salesforce, Slack). Inherits row-access policies and column security (docs). Upload limit: 5 files under 50 MB each.
- Cortex Analyst: multi-turn text-to-SQL via REST API (embed in Streamlit, Slack, Teams or custom apps); Routing Mode preview (2025-11-14).
- Cortex Agents: GA 2025-11-04; a Snowflake-managed MCP server is documented under Cortex Agents; CoWork connects to external tools through MCP connectors.
- AI Agent Identity (GA, Summit 2026): per-agent identity, role-based access and audit trail, not inherited from user credentials (Atlan).
- Caveat: Atlan flagged Horizon Context as narrower than competitors’ catalogue connectors; opinion.
Strengths and weaknesses vs peers
- Strength (opinion): runs where the data is and inherits Snowflake RBAC (docs); has a documented managed MCP server.
- Weakness (opinion): quality depends on semantic-view curation; usage billed per message/LLM use; cross-region inference for some regions. Peer: BI and Genie; classic BI front-ends: Tableau, Power BI.
