Agent Wallets (Agentic Wallets)

An agent wallet is a crypto wallet an AI agent can use to hold, send, trade and receive digital assets (usually stablecoins) under programmatic limits set by a human or operator, instead of a person approving each transaction. The term covers several vendor products; the best-documented one verified here is Coinbase’s Agentic Wallet.

Coinbase Agentic Wallet (docs fetched 2026-10-05)

Coinbase’s developer docs describe it as “a suite of tools for enabling AI agents to hold, spend, trade, and earn stablecoins, with built-in security guardrails”. Two options:

  • CLI with agent skills: awal commands for authentication, sending, trading and x402 payments; installed with npx skills add coinbase/agentic-wallet-skills. Aimed at developers building custom agents.
  • MCP server (beta): npx @coinbase/payments-mcp, for existing AI apps (docs name Claude, Codex and Gemini). Limited to payment discovery: agents find paid services and pay for them, but cannot execute transfers or trades. See Model Context Protocol.

x402, the payment protocol behind it

x402 is an open standard for internet-native payments built on the HTTP 402 Payment Required status: a server answers a request with payment requirements, the client returns a signed payment payload, a facilitator verifies and settles it, and the server delivers the resource. It is network-agnostic (crypto and fiat) and, per the repository notice (GitHub, fetched 2026-10-05), has moved under an x402 Foundation with Coinbase’s repo kept as a development fork.

Custody and control models (general design patterns)

  • Developer-controlled wallet: the application backend controls keys within policy limits; suits fully delegated agents.
  • User-owned wallet with a scoped agent signer: the user keeps ownership and can revoke the agent.
  • Common guardrails across products: spending limits, allow-listed destinations, time windows, key isolation (secure enclaves/TEEs), audit logs and an emergency revoke. These are design patterns, not claims about any one product’s exact feature set.

Use cases and risks (general discussion, not sourced to a specific product)

Typical uses: agents paying per call for APIs and data (machine-to-machine micropayments), automated trading or treasury tasks, and portfolio rebalancing. Risks: prompt-injection or tool abuse draining funds, unclear custody and regulatory treatment of autonomous spending, and weak standardization of revocation. Keeping agent balances small and limits tight is the author’s suggestion (opinion).

Not the same as AI tokens

Agent wallets are infrastructure for agents; “AI tokens” are crypto assets tied to AI projects.
