MetaMCP

What it is

MetaMCP is an MCP proxy that dynamically aggregates MCP servers into a unified MCP server and applies middleware; it is itself an MCP server, so any MCP client can use it (README, read 2026-10-08). Tagline: “MCP Aggregator, Orchestrator, Middleware, Gateway in one docker”.

Maker and licence

Repo metatool-ai/metamcp (single maintainer “James” per the repo’s recent-updates note), MIT licence. 2,698 stars on 2026-10-08; latest release v2.4.22 (2025-12-19); last push 2026-06-22 (GitHub API). Docs: https://docs.metamcp.com.

Position

Self-hosted MCP aggregator / gateway with a web UI.

Core capabilities (README)

  • Concepts: MCP servers, namespaces, endpoints, middleware, inspector, tool overrides and annotations.
  • Auth: API keys (Bearer), MCP OAuth following spec 2025-06-18, OIDC/SSO providers, Better Auth for the UI; multi-tenancy with private and public scopes; separate registration controls.
  • Traffic management: endpoint and per-user rate limits; counters are in-memory, so on a cluster each node counts only its own traffic (README).
  • Deployment: Docker Compose (recommended), dev containers or local; Nginx SSE configuration notes.

MCP spec support

README: tools, resources and prompts supported; OAuth-enabled MCP servers tested for the 03-26 version; OAuth on exposed endpoints follows the 2025-06-18 spec.

Maturity

The author states (recent-updates.md) that development is slow but the project is maintained, with PR merging and no aggressive new features; no release since 2025-12-19.

Fit and limits (opinion)

Good for self-hosters who want a UI to compose namespaces of tools. Because of the maintenance status stated by the author, evaluate carefully for production and compare MCPJungle and Obot.
