Google Tag Manager (GTM)
by Google (Google Marketing Platform)
Tag management system: add one container snippet, then manage analytics, advertising and custom tags from a web interface.
Concepts
- Container: the bundle of tags, triggers and variables installed on a site or app.
- Tag: what runs (GA4 event, Google Ads, Floodlight, third-party, custom HTML/template).
- Trigger: when it fires. Variable: reusable values (URL, click data, data layer values).
- Data layer: structured JS object from site code, the contract between developers and analytics.
- Workspaces, versions, environments, preview/debug mode, community template gallery, and an API.
Editions
Standard GTM is free; Tag Manager 360 is the enterprise option with extra features and support (per Google’s intro page). No prices recorded.
Server-side tagging
Same tag/trigger/variable model but executed on a tagging server you host, for page performance, privacy control and data quality. Google documents hosting on Google Cloud (Cloud Run or App Engine) or a platform of your choice; you also map a custom domain and send data from client to server container. Hosting incurs your own infrastructure cost.
Consent Mode
Consent Mode v2 uses four signals: ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization. Google’s consent guide documents these signals; the claim that all four have been mandatory for EEA traffic since November 2023 is not verified here. Set defaults before measurement tags fire (gtag('consent','default',...)) and update on user choice; use GTM consent templates or a CMP from the Community Template Gallery.
With GA4 and Ads
GTM can deploy GA4 and Google Ads tags. (Suggestions, opinion: use consistent event naming and pass ecommerce data through the data layer.)
Practices (author’s suggestions, opinion)
Design the data layer first; name tags clearly; use workspaces and preview before publishing; prune unused tags; use built-in or sandboxed templates; add server-side tagging selectively.
Limits (author’s view, opinion)
GTM only deploys tags; data quality depends on the implementation. Heavy business logic in GTM may be hard to audit.
