Oracle Analytics
What it is
Oracle’s BI platform family: Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) (managed service on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure), Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) (customer-managed, on-premises or own cloud), and Oracle Fusion Data Intelligence (FDI) (prebuilt analytics for Oracle Fusion ERP, HCM, SCM and CX applications, running on OAC and Autonomous Data Warehouse). Covers governed semantic modelling, self-service data visualisation, pixel-perfect reporting, AI assistant and ML.
Maker and history
- Maker: Oracle. The enterprise BI lineage (OBIEE) combines former Siebel and Hyperion offerings: nQuire (2000), acquired by Siebel Systems (2002), Oracle bought Siebel in 2005 for $5.85 billion; OBIEE 11g 2010, 12c 2015 (Wikipedia).
- Release cadence: OAC publishes monthly update posts (March and May 2026 seen); FDI uses “26.R2” (June 2026) style releases.
Products and editions
- OAC (service, subscription/OCI consumption), OAS (licensed, client-managed), FDI (subscription add-on for Fusion Applications). Edition names and prices: see Oracle’s pricing pages; not recorded. Free trial: not verified.
- OCI context: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Data connectivity and modelling
- Semantic Modeler (governed semantic model), datasets and data flows; supports Oracle Analytic Views as sources in OAS 2026 (ClearPeaks). Logical SQL is the query language exposed to tools (see MCP below).
- FDI runs on Autonomous Data Warehouse with Oracle Applications Cloud data (Oracle docs); third-party connectors not enumerated here.
Deployment
Cloud (OAC on OCI), on-premises/self-managed (OAS), and embedded in Fusion Applications (FDI).
AI features as of summer 2026
- AI Assistant (OAC and FDI): natural-language questions to queries/visualisations; FDI AI Assistant reportedly announced at Oracle AI World, 2025-10-14 (Oracle news page returned 403; seen via search snippet only, not verified).
- OAC AI Data Agents (March 2026 update, GA in update): pair a dataset with written guidance and supporting documents (for example HR policy files), attach to a workbook; viewers’ questions use both. Also a more narrative assistant and AI functions in custom calculations to summarise text, classify, or filter by meaning (Oracle blog and erp.today, March 2026).
- May 2026 update: reportedly adds binding of AI agent filters to workbook parameters and AI token usage monitoring (Oracle blog seen via search snippet only; not verified).
- MCP servers: “Oracle Analytics Cloud MCP Server (Preview)” exposes Discover, Describe and Execute (Logical SQL) tools to MCP clients such as Claude Desktop; OAuth 2.0, runs with the calling user’s permissions. “Oracle Fusion Data Intelligence MCP Server” lets AI clients reach FDI semantic models, KPIs and workbooks with role security enforced; the Access page is labelled Preview (Oracle docs; FDI “About” page does not state GA).
- OAS 2026: Language Narrative visualisation, OCI Vision image analysis, vector-based similarity, Prophet forecasting (ClearPeaks). Admins note: the MCP user guidance is that only data allowed to be shared with LLMs should be reachable.
- Fusion-wide: Oracle Fusion Agentic Applications reportedly announced March 2026 (search summary only; outside BI).
Strengths and weaknesses vs peers
- Strength (opinion): suited to Oracle Fusion/Autonomous DB shops; prebuilt FDI content; flexible cloud or on-premises.
- Weakness (opinion): smaller community and free learning ecosystem than Power BI or Tableau; best value only inside the Oracle estate. No independent benchmark was consulted.
