Maintenance mode

Databricks announced the acquisition of Redash in 2020 and the hosted service was shut down in 2021 (sources below). As of 2026-10-07 the GitHub release feed still shows releases; whether they are mostly maintenance and security work, and whether Redash has a formal “maintenance mode”, was not verified.

What it is

Redash is an open-source, SQL-first query, visualisation and dashboard tool: write a query in the browser, chart it, share dashboards, set alerts. Over 35 data sources including Databricks, BigQuery, Snowflake, PostgreSQL (GitHub README). See Open-source BI comparison.

Maker and history

Databricks announced the acquisition of Redash on 2020-06-24 at Spark and AI Summit (Databricks blog). Hosted Redash (app.redash.io) was shut down effective 2021-11-30 (redash.io help FAQ “Hosted Redash End of Life”), so Databricks could focus on SQL analytics within Databricks. Releases continue (the community-led nature is not verified): GitHub release feed shows CalVer tag v26.9.0 (around 2026-09-24) and monthly -dev tags; v26.3.0 also exists (date not confirmed). Licence BSD-2-Clause (GitHub).

Products and editions

Open source, self-host; no commercial edition was found (not verified).

Data connectivity and modelling

Query-centric; no semantic layer was found. Parameters in queries, API for automation.

Deployment

Self-hosted (Docker).

AI features as of 2026-10-05

None found: no Metabot-style assistant and no official MCP server located in the repo page or docs read. Treat as unknown rather than absent; third-party MCP wrappers were not searched.

Strengths and weaknesses (opinion)

  • Strengths: SQL-native; BSD-style licence.
  • Weaknesses (opinion): possibly slow development (not measured), no semantic layer, no AI found; 2026 comparison articles recommend Metabase or Superset for new projects (Knowi, fastero blogs - vendor-biased).
