Sisense

What it is

A BI and analytics platform that, per the vendor, focuses on embedded analytics: dashboards and analytics inside other companies’ products, built with Sisense Fusion (dashboards, ElastiCube data engine), the Compose SDK (code-first React/Angular/Vue/TypeScript components) and the Embed SDK (whole dashboards via JavaScript). Sisense Intelligence is its AI layer.

Maker and history

  • Maker: Sisense Inc., described by Wikipedia as founded in 2004 in Tel Aviv with HQ in New York City (secondary). Periscope Data acquisition, a 2020 funding round and valuation, and 2022 headcount cuts appear only on Wikipedia and are not verified (see Open items). Ariel Katz is named as CEO in a Sisense press release (undated). See company note.

Products and editions

  • Deployment-flavoured releases: cloud and self-hosted Linux (“SisenseLinux” docs). The developer portal advertises a free trial; names of commercial tiers and prices: ask Sisense, not recorded.
  • Sisense Intelligence AI features consume “AI credits” (Sisense 2026.4 notes mention search consuming zero credits).

Data connectivity and modelling

ElastiCube (in-memory/columnar engine) and live models; connectors to AWS, Azure and Snowflake (per Wikipedia). 2026.3 adds a Data Modeling Agent (GA) that builds a semantic model from raw data conversationally. Calculated Dimensions in widgets GA. Compose SDK 2.36.0 in 2026.4.

Deployment

Cloud, self-hosted, embedded in third-party apps. 2026.4 adds Dedicated AI Services (GA, managed single-tenant customers only) so AI runs inside the customer’s environment.

AI features as of summer 2026

  • Assistant (broadly available for all users per Sisense press release of 2026-01-13): natural-language analytics, build charts and sample data models in conversation; in 2026.4 it becomes a collapsible sidebar with inline charts and widget creation.
  • Bring your own LLM: OpenAI at Jan 2026; 2026.4 pre-release docs list OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Google Gemini and Anthropic models (GA). Sisense Managed LLM: private preview in the 2026-01-13 press release, “scheduled to be available to all customers in Spring 2026” (later status not checked).
  • MCP Server: beta in 2026.3 (2026-08-14; cloud and self-hosted; OAuth 2.1, per-user short-lived credentials, scoped to user permissions); listed GA in the 2026.4 pre-release notes with a new buildDashboard tool. Works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients.
  • Sisense Intelligence Search (natural-language dashboard/widget search): GA in 2026.3, scoped to share permissions. Dashboard Narrative GA and Pulse (assistant-driven alerts, Beta) in 2026.4. Needs Sisense Intelligence with a configured LLM.
  • Caveat: the 2026.4 page is pre-release documentation (October 2026); treat 2026.4 statuses as announced until release.

Strengths and weaknesses vs peers

  • Vendor positioning (not independently assessed): embedding flexibility, SDKs and an MCP server for agents.
  • Weakness (opinion, unsourced): may have a smaller ecosystem than Looker, Power BI or Tableau; no independent comparison consulted. Layoff reports (2022, 2024) are not verified. Closest vendor-neutral peers in the vault: Sigma, Looker.
