What changed in 2026

Official MCP Registry (https://registry.modelcontextprotocol.io): launched in preview on 2025-09-08; API freeze v0.1 since 2025-10-24; the repo README (read 2026-10-02) still says the registry is in preview with the v0.1 API freeze (no breaking changes; data resets still possible) and GA “later”. Backers include Anthropic, GitHub, PulseMCP and Microsoft. The GitHub MCP Registry (launched 2025-09-16) lists servers published to the community registry.
Smithery was acquired by Arcade.dev (announced 2026-08-05, terms undisclosed; Arcade blog, Forbes 2026-08-10). It still runs at smithery.ai. Count conflict: the homepage showed 24,516+ MCPs on 2026-10-01, while an August press piece cited 17,300+.
PulseMCP still shows (2026-10-01) that new submissions and listing changes are paused while ingestion is reworked; no 2026-dated content on its home page; newsletter “The Agentic Loop”.
Glama registry showed 94,658 open-source MCP servers on 2026-10-01 (quality grades A-F, remote-hosting filters); the awesome list behind it, punkpeye/awesome-mcp-servers, has 95.7k GitHub stars (MIT).
mcp.run redirects to turbomcp.ai (self-hosted enterprise MCP gateway); the original registry appears gone.

PulseMCP (https://www.pulsemcp.com): directory plus newsletter, run by Tadas Antanavicius and Mike Coughlin (pulsemcp.com/about, 2026-10-02); submissions paused.
Smithery (https://smithery.ai): marketplace with hosted auth/credential handling (open-source agent.pw vault) and publishing with usage metrics; now part of Arcade.dev.
Glama (https://glama.ai/mcp/servers): largest count seen; auto-graded listings.
Cline MCP marketplace (https://cline.bot/mcp-marketplace): shows 100+ curated servers (earlier note said 200+; the page does not state a total), submission via GitHub. Cline is actively developed (see cline).
mcp.so: active (new submissions show hours-old timestamps); submit via button or GitHub issue; no total shown.
Not re-checked: mcpserver.cloud, mcpservers.org, cursor.directory, Docker Hub MCP catalog (see docker-mcp-vs-gradio-toolsets-comparison), Composio (rube).

AiDD MCP Server (skydeckai/mcp-server-aidd): file operations, tree-sitter code analysis, execution, web and system tools; Apache-2.0; 3 stars, 125 commits, not archived (“in active development”).
MCP Alchemy (runekaagaard/mcp-alchemy): relational DB access (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, Oracle, MS SQL Server, CrateDB, Vertica, other SQLAlchemy databases); MPL-2.0; 419 stars; latest release 2026.9.5.185701 on PyPI; actively maintained.
supergateway (supercorp-ai/supergateway): runs stdio MCP servers over SSE, WebSockets or Streamable HTTP; MIT; 2.9k stars; not archived.

Smithery server count conflict (17,300 in an August press piece vs 24,516 on the homepage, 2026-10-01): counts change daily; not a stable fact. The Arcade blog (read 2026-10-02) confirms the acquisition on 2026-08-05 and that co-founder Anirudh Kamath joined Arcade; it gives no server count; terms still undisclosed.
